About the Book

August 1939 and as the storm clouds of war gather over Europe a Russian Commissar together with his daughter leave the Kremlin on a desperate flight to the west. In his possession are copies of one of the most controversial treaties ever signed - the notorious 'Non-Aggression Pact' between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany penned by the foreign ministers of both countries; Vyacheslav Molotov and Joachim von Ribbentrop. This document is the final link in a chain of events which will plunge the world into total war. When the Soviet authorities learn of his disappearance Joseph Stalin orders Russia's internal security, headed by the dreaded NKVD to find Commissar Valentin Mikhova at all costs and his fate to be determined by a firing squad. The story covers one of the most tumultuous decades in European history, beginning in World War One and follows the career of airman, engineer and political operative Colonel Commissar Mikhova as he climbs the slipper pole of power in Communist Russia together with such luminaries as Stalin and Trotsky. He survives the civil war that followed the coup engineered by Lenin and the subsequent famines, political purges and terror which turned the USSR into one vast slave labour camp and decimated his family. Finally, disenchanted with his country he turns to England for help and becomes a traitor, chased across the land of his birth in a carefully thought out plan of false leads, subterfuge and murder.
