About the Book

As Siân attempts to write, there is an electric cut. In the darkness, she begins to think about her neighbour, Simon Kaltenbach, who has built a great, ugly wall between the two houses. This leads her to recall her upbringing, and the walls that hindered her development as a child.

Review :
Nofel amlhaenog gyda themâu cyfoes yn rhedeg drwyddi. Mae’r nofel yn dilyn fformat llyfr sydd yn helpu plant dysgu darllen. Wrth i’r nofel fynd rhagddi, mae ffont y geiriau yn mynd yn llai, sef arwydd o ddatblygiad llythrennedd plentyn. Yn Wal mae’n arwydd o’r prif gymeriad, Siân, yn dysgu mwy amdani hi ei hun a theflir goleuni ar y tywyllwch a chodir pontydd yn lle waliau. Mae Wal hefyd yn lyfr clawr caled a gwelir geiriau allweddol yn britho gwaelod y ddalen. Dywedodd Mereid Hopwood yn ei beirniadaeth ar y nofel hon yng nghystadleuaeth Y Fedal Ryddiaith, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Sir Conwy 2019, fod yma waith 'cynnil, meistrolgar a chwbl wreiddiol'. Dyma Siân. Mae hi’n noson dywyll. Does gan Siân ddim stori heno. Mae hi’n ddu ar Siân heno. Dyna flas ar arddull fydd yn eich disgwyl wrth ddarllen Wal. Mae’r gair ‘arbrofol’ yn aml iawn yn cael ei orddefnyddio wrth drin a thrafod nofelau, neu unrhyw waith creadigol, ond mae’n talu ei le wrth drafod y nofel yma. Roedd Wal ymhlith y saith a oedd yn deilwng o’r Fedal Ryddiaith yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Dyffryn Conwy. Yn draddodiadol mae’r gystadleuaeth honno yn chwilio am weithiau sy’n fwy arbrofol ac yn gwthio ffiniau. Yn sicr, arbrawf yw Wal i weld os gall stori gyda sawl haen iddi wneud synnwyr mewn iaith ‘dysgu darllen’. Mae cymeriadau’r nofel wedi eu henwi ar ôl Gareth a Sian o gyfres Ladybird. Ar y nodyn yna mae’n werth sôn am estheteg y nofel. Mae gwaith celf y clawr yn fendigedig ac yn adlais amlwg o’r gyfres Ladybird. Mae hefyd yn lyfr clawr caled, rhywbeth anghyffredin ym myd cyhoeddi ffuglen Cymraeg i oedolion, a hynny yn adlais arall o lyfrau Ladybird. Mae waliau yn thema sy’n rhedeg drwy’r stori, boed yn ddiriaethol neu haniaethol. Mae wal yn cael ei chodi rhwng ardd Sian a Simon am bod Babka y ci yn baeddu yn ei gardd. Mae waliau emosiynol rhwng rhai o gymeriadau’r nofel. Gall pob un ohonom gydymdeimlo â hynny. Ai cymdeithas fel hyn ydym ni ynddi heddiw? Yn gwarafun gweld pen pobl drws nesa yn edrych dros y gwrych? Ein lle ni ydi fan hyn, rydan ni isio llonydd. Felly rydan ni am adeiladu ffens. Sylwebaeth gymdeithasol felly gawn gan yr awdur. Awdures yw Siân ac mae hi mewn bloc. Wal anweledig yn nadu iddi fod yn greadigol. Mae storm y noson honno ac mae’r trydan wedi diffodd, ac yng ngolau ei channwyll atgoffir hi o gyfnod y ‘3 day week’ yn y saithdegau yn ystod llywodraeth geidwadol Edward Heath ble roedd plant yn cael eu haddysg adref, mae’n meddwl am ei phlentyndod ac yn chwilio am atebion. Fel mae’r nofel yn mynd yn ei blaen a daw mwy o haenau i’r stori. Drwy hynny mae’n dod i ddysgu mwy am hi ei hun a’i magwraeth. Mae ysgrifennu gwych wrth sôn am Mam, Dad ac Anti Rita sydd yn hynod o grafog. Ynghanol naws diniweidrwydd gall y cynildeb ar un wedd fod yn sinistr, neu’n andros o ddoniol – ‘ond mae’n anodd rhedeg ar flaenau eich traed mewn sandalau Dr Scholl.’ Pam fod mam yn rhedeg? Mae hi a Siân newydd weld Rosie am y tro cyntaf. Rosie, y ferch fach sydd mewn cadair olwyn, a gafodd ei geni fel plentyn thalidomide. Mae Siân a Rosie yn dod yn ffrindiau gorau. Mae unigrwydd y ddwy yn eu tynnu at ei gilydd. Drwy bontio’r llyfrau megis Barti Ddu gan T Llew Jones a Dragon Pirate Stories dengys fod cryfder mewn rhannu, nid gwahanu. Gan fod Siân ar y cyrion yn yr ysgol a Rosie ar gyrion y gymdeithas oherwydd ei hanabledd daw’n glir mai cyfeillgarwch a charedigrwydd sy’n chwalu waliau. Yn rhyfedd iawn mae’r nofel wedi ei chyhoeddi mewn cyfnod hynod o amserol. Yn gyntaf gan bod llifogydd enbyd wedi taro rhannau o’r wlad ychydig cyn ei chyhoeddi, mae Simon a Babka yn wynebu dinistr tebyg tua diwedd y nofel, oherwydd y ‘wal hyll sy’n creithio dau gymydog.’ Pa bris fyddai rhywun yn ei dalu am adeiladu wal, felly? Mae’r ‘3 day week’ hefyd yn ein hatgoffa o blant yn cael eu haddysgu adref oherwydd y pandemig Covid-19. Firws sydd ddim yn parchu unrhyw waliau, ond eto sy’n mynnu cadw teulu a ffrindiau arwahân. Mae lle i nofel fel hon ar ein silffoedd. Efallai ei fod yn gwneud i’r meddwl weithio fymryn yn galetach i ddod i arfer â’r arddull, ond yn sicr cewch brofiad wrth ei darllen.
