Review :
Credaf i mi glywed fod Bob Owen wedi cwyno'n arw pan ymddangosodd Y Bywgraffiadur Cymreig gyntaf oherwydd i nifer o Gymry America gael eu cadw allan o'r cyhoeddiad. Ar l darllen y gyfrol hon gan Eirug Davies caf fy hun yn cydymdeimlo gyda'r llyfrbryf a'r casglwr llyfrau o Groesor. Cawn yn y llyfr hwn ddilyn hanes y berthynas rhwng y Cymry ac America o'r ail ganrif ar bymtheg hyd at ddiwedd teyrnasiad Fictoria. A ninnau heddiw yn llygaid-dystion i'r ymfudiad mwyaf o ffoaduriaid a cheiswyr lloches a welodd y byd erioed, mae'n ddiddorol sylwi i ni fel Cymry unwaith ddianc rhag gormes ac erledigaeth. Yn wahanol i drigolion Syria heddiw, nid i Ewrop y troesom ein golygon ond yn hytrach i'r Byd Newydd tros yr Iwerydd. Rhyddid i addoli oedd yr ysgogiad i lawer o Gymry fynd i America gyntaf. Bu i'r Crynwyr ymsefydlu ym Mhennsylvania gan chwarae rhan bwysig iawn yn natblygiad y dalaith honno. Dilynid hwy gan eraill, gan gyfoethogi llawer ar fywyd y wlad oedd yn gartref newydd iddynt. Nid ceisio'r rhyddid i addoli oedd yr unig reswm tros fynd i America. Ceisiai rhai fywyd economaidd gwell a dihangodd eraill rhag gormes y meistr tir. Yna, mewn cyfnod diweddarach, byddai datblygiad diwydiannau trymion yn Scranton yn abwyd i lawer o Gymry droi eu golygon tuag yno. Dymuniad rhai oedd gweld sefydlu Gwladfa Gymreig ar y cyfandir newydd. Ond pan ddeuai'r Chwyldro a'r Rhyfel Annibyniaeth fe fyddai rhai Cymry yn chwarae rhan amlwg iawn. Pan ddaeth y Rhyfel Cartref ochrodd trwch y Cymry gyda'r Undeb ac fe chwaraeodd nifer ran bwysig yn y frwydr yn erbyn caethwasiaeth. Ond o gymharu chenhedloedd eraill, cymharol ychydig o Gymry a ymfudodd (roedd gan Gymru ei maes glo i gynnig cyfleon i'n pobl). Er yr hiraeth cawn y teimlad fod yr ymfudo wedi bod o fantais i'r Cymry. Bu iddynt wireddu eu potensial gan flodeuo mewn ffyrdd na fyddai wedi bod yn bosib iddynt yng ngwlad eu geni. Ond mae rhywun yn synhwyro i rannau helaeth o gefn gwlad Meirion, Maldwyn a Cheredigion gael eu tlodi'n arw dros y canrifoedd oherwydd yr allfudiad i America. Rhoddir cryn sylw yn y gyfrol i sut y ceisiai'r Cymry ddal eu gafael ar eu hunaniaeth yn y wlad newydd. Codasant gapeli (ac ambell eglwys) ac yna sefydlwyd yr eisteddfod lle roedd cyfle arall i roi mynegiant i'w harwahanrwydd diwylliannol. Cyrhaeddodd y traddodiad eisteddfodol ryw fath o benllanw gydag Eisteddfod Ffair y Byd, Chicago, yn 1893. Colli eu hanes fyddai eu tynged (ac fe sylwodd Michael D. Jones yn arbennig ar y duedd hon). Er hynny ni fanylir gymaint hynny ar hyn yn yr astudiaeth hon. Mae'n drueni hefyd na fyddai yna fapiau, lluniau a mynegai i'w cael gyda'r gwaith. Ond cyfrol gyfoethog yw hon gyda cherddi ac ysgrifau sy'n rhoi mynegiant croyw ac uniongyrchol o brofiadau'r Cymry. Cynhwysir llyfryddiaeth werthfawr sy'n cyfeirio'n bennaf at ffynonellau gwreiddiol yn y Taleithiau Unedig. Mae'r cyfan yn gyfraniad pwysig i'n dealltwriaeth o hanes y Cymry yn America. Dafydd Morgan Lewis Gellir defnyddio'r adolygiad hwn at bwrpas hybu, ond gofynnir i chi gynnwys y gydnabyddiaeth ganlynol: Adolygiad oddi ar www.gwales.com, trwy ganiatd Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru.
