About the Book

This book attempts to chronicle the historical events that made the Strawberry Beds the unique place it is today. The Liffey Valley and its river were formed by the retreating glaciers 20,000 years ago. However it was the early settlers, then the Vikings, followed by the Normans and subsequent plantations, and finally the Irish people who moulded and shaped the Strawberry Beds. The central theme of the book is the people and all families and names are recorded from the available documents that date back to the start of the nineteenth century. The names were extracted from Griffiths Valuation (1843), the Census records of 1901 and 1911 and the school rolls of the Lower Road School from 1904 to 1971. Whether the people worked in the mills, the market gardens, the estates or employment connected with the Royal Forces, the people are the main focus. The book also records some stories of how the people went about their day to day living in this agricultural area. These stories and memorable happenings are remembered by the author and are by no means exhaustive. It is hoped that the reader will find his or her own name recorded within the book and that this in turn will bring back fond memories of old friends or school companions. The author hopes these memories will bring forward new stories, photographs, letters or whatever that will contribute to the newly formed Strawberry Beds Historical Society. The Strawberry Beds has a rich heritage.
