About the Book

"The essays from leading tree scientists collected in In the Circle of Ancient Trees read like fervent love letters to ten of the most ancient and important tree species on the planet ... Awe-inspiring."--Foreword Reviews This captivating book about dendrochronology--the study of tree rings--uncovers the stories of 10 species of ancient trees, their unique environments and climates, and what they have to tell us about the history of our world. Ingrained and encrypted in the growth rings of every tree are stories of its environment and the events to which it bore witness. In the Circle of Ancient Trees presents the stories of ten ancient tree varieties in engrossing chapters written by ecologists with specialist knowledge. From the Bosnian pine to the giant sequoia, from the United States, to Europe, to South America, these essays explore how human and environmental history share common roots, while drilling down into the ecology, persistence, and resilience of trees. Beautifully designed, and illustrated with wood-engravings and graphics that visualize each tree's chronology and geography, In the Circle of Ancient Trees considers what lessons for our future might be discovered in our planet's past. Published in Partnership with the David Suzuki Institute

Review :
"Many books recount the lengths scientists go to study animals. In these exquisitely illustrated pages, we hear from ten explorers who clamber down cliffs, traverse bogs, and dodge killer bees to study the world's greatest plants. Finally!" --Oliver Uberti, Atlas of the Invisible and Where the Animals Go "Tree scientist Valerie Trouet has wrangled an extraordinary group of dendrochronologists from around the world to craft first-person accounts about ten essential trees. Readers will find endless fascinations and engaging personal stories between the covers of this beautiful book." --Daniel Lewis, author of Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of Our Future "Read this book and you will be touched! The knowledge you gain from these ten exquisitely crafted essays will be full of insight and full of wonder. For here, in ring after ring and story after story, are remarkable examinations of ancient trees and their unique histories. From the indomitable bristlecone pines to singular sequoias, and from phenomenal bald cypresses to commanding oaks, you will be captivated by each contributor's research, commitment, and, of course, passion. This is a book most difficult to put down; one engaging in its scope and embracing in its discoveries. It is, quite simply, an arboreal tour de force. Read it; become one with the trees!" --Anthony D. Fredericks, author of In Search of the Old Ones: An Odyssey among Ancient Trees "The essays from leading tree scientists collected in In the Circle of Ancient Trees read like fervent love letters to ten of the most ancient and important tree species on the planet...[A]we-inspiring...a hardy introduction to the uses and methods of dendrochronology." --Foreword
