About the Book

London. Whitechapel. 1890. Paranormal Investigator Adelard Steel is called to a crime scene. What he finds there shows evidence of Dark Magic. A man has been sacrificed in a ritual that has markings that he is unfamiliar with. But he can sense that the victim's soul energy has been used to open a portal, and something monstrous has come through from another plane of existence. As he investigates two more scenes, it becomes apparent that the three victims are connected. All of them were practitioners of magic, and had possessed a book which contained spells which allowed the spellcaster to summon Abda-Shekkar-In, a ravenous protoplasmic creature that dwells in the outer darkness. He discovers this when he questions the niece of one of the victims, who is herself a psychic. His fears are realised when he and his companions confront the intruding beast in the sewers of London. Not long after this, he is brought to the Temple of the Ebon Star, where the Master there confirms his thought that someone is trying to bring the monster to the earthly plane. But so far, their attempts have failed because the books were fakes. Only the Spawn, which is a part of Abda-Shekkar-In has been able to come through. Then, the Master reveals the identity of the seeker of the genuine book. Shocked, Steel finally knows that the one he seeks was once a collegue of his; Mortimer Clench. He and his wife accompanied Steel as Steel searched the world over for occult artifacts. Unfortunately, she was killed when they sprung a trap in an Egyptian tomb. Clench blamed Steel for her death, and they had become implacable enemies. Now, it is clear that Clench has lost his mind, and wishes to bring the creature to earth. It lives on the stuff of soul energy, and no earthly weapon can harm it, so if Clench is successful in invoking it, it would mean the end of all life on earth. Steel knows that he must not allow such a thing to happen. But can he stop Clench? Is his own magic powerful enough? Will he succeed, or will Abda-Shekkar-In make earth a dead world?
