About the Book

Far Side of Tears is about families united by grief for sons killed or anxiety for those captured in the bold commando raid on the French port of St Nazaire in 1942. It is an unusual war story, perhaps unique. Micky Burn, a gay writer and poet, led 28 men into the raid. Fourteen died and seven (including him) were captured. Micky ended up in the notorious prisoner-of-war camp, Colditz, where he wrote poems and a novel, and lectured on communism in the heart of Hitler's Germany. Micky had asked his parents, Clive and Phyllis, to write to their families if the worst should happen. The Burns created a rich and moving archive of letters between these grieving or anxious families that illuminate the lives and deaths of a small but close-knit group of British soldiers and those who loved them. The story of Micky's men and their families helps us to understand what war does to families, and how long the pain endures. Far Side of Tears invites the reader to accompany a group of young men into one of the most daring raids of the war. We follow their families as they cope with uncertainty, denial, bereavement, and an unsympathetic bureaucracy. The prisoners and their families face loss, separation and at last liberation. Finally, we travel with the survivors on a journey towards remembrance and acceptance, as Micky put it in one of his poems, to the 'far side of tears'.
