Review :
9 May 2024: Review from Dr Kevin Murray - editor of Garland Magazine, co-founder and board member of Knowledge House for Craft, and Vice-President, World Crafts Council – International “The publication to celebrate their anniversary is suitably epic. Its 500 pages are filled with personal testimonies and beautiful colour photographs of the works and their makers. There are baskets, costumes, mats, fans and wall hangings, made not only with luscious natural fibres but also brightly coloured raffia and even recycled plastic bags. The testimonies are touching accounts of lives well spent, often guided by Christian faith and buoyed by strong community support.” 11 July 2024: Review from Philip Clarke ONZM – a leader and advocate in the craft sector for over 30 years. Philip Clarke was the inaugural director of Objectspace, 2004-15. He has been Chairman of the Blumhardt Foundation since 2018 and is a Trustee for New Zealand Fashion Museum, the Mansion House Foundation and The Big Idea since 2021. An elite institution of higher learning. “The operation of the Falepipi he Malofa Niuean Handcraft Group bears the hallmarks of an elite institution of higher education. It has an unswerving focus on the transmission, and application, of traditional knowledge; includes contemporary subjects such as the Treaty of Waitangi; espouses a specific pedagogy; publishes in multiple formats; actively collects data and information; partners with other organisations; and over a considerable period has accumulated capital (in this case cultural rather than financial). Elite, because like elite academies it is actively concerned with the overall wellbeing (social and spiritual) of its membership. Its legal description might be ‘community group’, but step back and consider its operation, this organisation possesses the characteristics of an elite institution of higher learning.”
