About the Book

The 90s live on in this edgy offstage glimpse of the indie musical artists that shaped a decade. The music of the 1990s shaped more than one generation. It was the music Generation X came of age listening to and the songs millennials cut their teeth on. In Lived Through That, professional photographer and music enthusiast Mike Hipple shares intimate and unique photographic portraits of dozens of the greatest artists from the '90s. Accompanied by in-depth interviews throughout, this behind-the-scenes image-driven collection reveals details of each musician’s time in the limelight as well as where life has taken them. Their words and images are open, honest, inspiring, and personal, offering profound and humorous memories and gems of wisdom that will resonate with fans and music lovers alike. From Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic to indie icon Tanya Donelly to Arrested Development’s Speech, the portraits and stories featured in Lived Through That cover a wide range of rock, rap, and alternative stars. Whether they were chart-toppers or underground sensations, the artists in Hipple’s epic collection tell the story and reawaken the songs of a pivotal era.

Review :
"A handsome, intimate, and engaging volume of photos and interviews with ’90s musicians." —Kirkus Reviews "These photos capture the humanity and approachability that typifies these heroes. And while it is wonderful to see that so many of these artists have matured so gracefully, I see the face of my dear departed friend Adam Schlesinger, and I am reminded of just how precious these captured moments in time can be." —Paul Myers, host of The Record Store Day Podcast, author of Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy and A Wizard a True Star: Todd Rundgren in the Studio "Lived Through That is a reunion as well as a necessary reminder of why the 1990s were such a fun and interesting time to be a music fan." —Jason Diamond, author of The Sprawl: Reconsidering the Weird American Suburbs and Searching for John Hughes: Or Everything I Thought I Needed to Know about Life I Learned from Watching ’80s Movies "Lived Through That is a beautiful photographic reminder of a special era in music. These photos tell a story about alternative icons often left out of mainstream music." —Charles R. Cross, author of Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain "Lived Through That features candid portraits and brief interviews with dozens of alternative musicians from the 90s. I loved the variety of artists featured, many being lesser known but fantastic. My favorites were: Anna Waronker (That Dog), Mary Lou Lord, Speech (Arrested Development), Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), etc. A perfect coffee table book for anyone who loved 90s alternative. Thank you Girl Friday Books and NetGalley for providing this ARC." —Mara Lyons "With its eclectic mix of interviewees, Hipple's book illustrates why the '90s were such an exciting time to be a music fan. Lived Through That: '90s Musicians Today focuses on artists that are often overlooked when talking about the decade, leading to profiles that are fresh, fascinating, and often quite moving. The book's artist portraits are also vivid and striking and illuminate the passion Hipple has for both the music and his subjects. Lived Through That: '90s Musicians Today ends up feeling like you're catching up with old friends—but also doubles as a blueprint for living a creative life on your own terms." —Annie Zaleski, music journalist and author of the 33 1/3 Volume 156: Duran Duran's Rio
