About the Book

A tale of magic and culture, defiance and courage, justice, and myths made real that readers everywhere can greatly enjoy! (Reedsy review) Join Emilia, her Grandfather Anzi, her best friend Miguel, and Calista the Bear on a life-changing adventure where together they discover a lost history, an ancient myth, and the incredible surprise of who Emilia really is, or rather who she could be if she survives the challenge! But it's not just about her, their entire village could be ruined! The Biggest Bear follows Emilia as she unravels a recurring dream with her grandfather that leads them both on an epic adventure where she discovers the secret of her past and who she really is - if she could only accept it. Meanwhile, Emilia and her fast friend, Miguel, uncover a corrupt scheme to destroy their way of life that puts her at odds with her father. Along the way, Emilia comes to understand how history and destiny are intertwined, and how to put bullies to good use! But can she accept what that means to save her friends, her family, and herself? The Biggest Bear is a multi-generational, adventure about self-discovery, personal empowerment, and cultural justice with just enough magic to make you wonder.

Review :
Goodreads Review: When I first read The Biggest Bear I immediately fell in love with Emilia and how I connected to her character throughout my teenage years. The sweetness of Emilia's love for life filled me like breath. Emilia's journey reminds us that gardening is an act of faith, to have complete trust and confidence. Paul Jay writes beautifully from the perspective of a young teenager who is wise and strong. The Biggest Bear is a deep mysterious and grounded story about being in nature, connecting with others and meaningful work. This story captures the beauty of dreams, mystery, adventure, trust, and being alive. I recommend this book to all ages because there is something here for everyone. Reedsy Review: The Biggest Bear is the story of Emilia, a Hispanic girl whose family works the coffee fields surrounding their small village. But when Calaco, the coffee conglomerate that now owns most of the village land, threatens to spread their influence even further into Emilia's everyday life, a fight to understand her place in the world springs up inside her. With the help of her best friend Miguel, Grandfather Anzi, and the mysterious Bear Spirit Calista, Emilia must find the courage to face both her inner fears and her outer problems as she dares to fight for her home, her people, and their shared heritage. I love Hispanic culture, and The Biggest Bear shows a rich slice of life in the small village where Emilia lives. Going from everyday life cooking and celebrating heritage festivals, to the wilds where nature reigns and the ghosts of her heritage linger for those who have eyes to see them, Emilia's life is full of the magic of Mexico. Emilia is a character I can strongly identify with, as she struggles to learn more about her heritage in an increasingly loud, modern world. Fighting to find answers to questions no one else seems to ask, Emilia begins to discover that there is so much more to her world than coffee fields, bullies, and days of endless toil. And when she finds that she has to make a choice on what her role in the world will be, Emilia journeys to become something more in order to save her village from a terrible decades-old injustice. I loved the Mexican culture of both past and present that was woven throughout the story. Anzi, Emilia's grandfather, is the wise grandfather we all wish we had, full of stories and history of the past that he's willing to share only when the time is right. Miguel is a dear friend to Emilia, and Emilia's parents show a realistic view into the division the debate between heritage and progress often creates. The overall story of a girl standing up for what she believes in, no matter who it might disappoint, is truly inspirational. Jungian Center for Spiritual Sciences: I got hooked on the story immediately and could not put it down! What a tale! How vividly you write and create scenes! I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it highly. Sue Mehrtens, Director
