Review :
Editorial ReviewsReview"Gary Porter's new book, Town Kid, is rich in detail, filled with tidbits of history, and wrapped in a package of skilled writing." Jerry Apps, Author of Simple Things: Lessons from the Family Farm "Gary Porter infuses his love of growing up in Greenfield, Iowa, into his collection of artfully crafted essays. Through youthful memories of his home town, Porter rejuvenates those bygone times with great detail in each story. These captured details evoke the sights, sounds, smells, and feel from his reminiscences into environments all readers will understand." John Busbee, The Culture Buzz "Gary Porter's collection of stories take me back to my own childhood in small-town Kentucky. A thriving main street, the county fair in August, the sound a screen door makes when it slams shut. Be forewarned, in the remembering there is some melancholy along with an immense amount of joy-just as it should be." Marty Martin, President, Drake University "Thank you, Gary Porter, for reminding us of the profoundly rich experiences and the lifelong memories we carry with us of growing up in Iowa. Porter's essays touch a chord in Iowans lucky enough to have been there, done that. Read this lovely book, then revisit your hometown-in person or in your dreams. Time well-spent." Mary Kay Shanley, 2012 Iowa Author of the Year "My ol' pal and hero-in-journalism Hugh Sidey once led off a Time magazine column by saying, 'When I think of my childhood in Greenfield, Iowa, I can't remember ever being bored, not ever, not a single time.' It was that way for Hugh when he grew up there in the 1930s and 40s, and this new book of essays by Gary Porter proves it was still that way for his generation of Greenfield kids in the 1950s and 60s. It's high praise for a town if people grow up and grow old thinking that way." Chuck Offenburger, former "Iowa Boy" columnist, Des Moines Register "Rich with sensory detail and evocative memories, Town Kid is a delightful collection of essays that together form a love story about small-town life in the 1960s. You don't have to be from Greenfield or Iowa to enjoy Porter's trip down memory lane." Carol Bodensteiner, author of Growing Up Country: Memories of an Iowa Farm Girl "Town Kid defines 'home' with amusing and heartfelt stories of the author's youth, which prompts a flood of wonderful memories. The magic lies in the ability of the stories to transport us back to our own youth." John H. Potter, Executive Director, The Phipps Center for the Arts "Who needs H.G. Wells and his time machine when you've got Gary Porter's stories? Warm and heartfelt reminiscences about a time that you lived in or now wish you had." Brian Roegge, Owner, Chapter2Books "When Gary asked me to work with him, using The Sidey Collection(R) for his new book, I thought, What fun! And it was fun...and a great way to showcase photos by the Sidey journalists. Some were taken by K. H. Sidey; others by my husband, Ed; and highly likely some by interns and staff. Gary was very selective and made sure the photos fit his vision. I hope Gary continues to record his thoughts and memories and that The Sidey Collection is included in them. Thanks Gary!" Linda Sidey, The Sidey Collection
