About the Book

Tripio is historical fiction novel, set in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago in the summer of 1992. From his small apartment, where he works on his first novel, Jay takes in his surroundings, survives his workdays as a key holder at an embryonic company called Starbucks, and begins a romance with a fellow employee. However, Tripio is not a love letter to Starbucks, but rather a day in the life of someone who experienced its' growth in the trenches, giving the reader a look behind the curtain at the beginnings of world-renowned company during its early, formative years. As the protagonist is pulled up the ladder at Starbucks, he resists because he has moved to Chicago to test his metal as writer, not find a career. The book opens as he is struggling with writing the final chapters of his first novel. The inner workings of the mind of a first-time novelist consume Jay. He journeys in and around Lakeview to help create answers to not only the novel's end but also to question whether he is truly up to living his life as a writer. The tenuous dream of living as writer conflicts with the fact that he is soon to take part in the Starbucks IPO, which he is beginning to realize is a once in a lifetime opportunity. As both his career prospects and novel progress, the protagonist is drawn into a relationship with an engaging, well-read, and beautiful coworker. They quickly fall for each other, move in together and in a short while are dealing with a high-risk pregnancy. Tripio explores three types of human creative endeavor. All three story lines are entwined using a journaling style which gives the reader an intimate portrayal of the births of a novel, a company, and a family.

About the Author :
Jerry Vanschaik is America's premier coffee novelist, perhaps because he is the only one! He has written two full-length novels: "Tripio" (2019) and "The Trier: A Week in the Life and Death of a Coffeehouse" (2023).Jerry began his career in coffee during the late 1980s. He has done everything in the coffee business from throwing 132-pound bags of green coffee off the back of a semi to throwing drunken customers out of his pioneering Starbucks store in Chicago. As a result, he is able to create worlds where coffee is nearly a living character and not a trendy plot affectation.Writing has always been a type of meditative practice for Jerry. He began journaling after leaving college and keeps a journal to this day. In order to keep his mind in a place of energized calm so that he can sit down to write, Jerry does yoga, meditates, the aforementioned journaling, reads, and tries not to take it all too seriously. His four young adult children make sure of that.Jerry left the coffee business behind him, but still starts the day with a double espresso.

Review :
At first I thought the book would mostly be about the origin and timeline of Starbucks, but eventually became a coming-of-age novel about being a struggling twenty-something in Chicago in the 90's. Post college, I related to Jay as he struggled with whether or not to eat a decent meal or use the money to pay rent. Starbucks, or any other service position is only a part of the book and if you've ever working in a related industry will tickle you with the stories of crazy customers and the like. Jerry's careful narrative is enjoyable, heavy at times, and a reminder of my twenties with ups, downs, and everything in between. Grab a pot of coffee and settle in for a delightful read!
