About the Book

Have you ever finished a book and wondered, "What made the author think of that?" Or wondered if there was a chapter in the original manuscript that didn't make it through the final edits? Maybe you'd like to get a sneak peek at what an author is currently working on. Work In Progress includes fifty-nine excerpts from some talented authors' works in progress in different stages of the writing process, followed up with the story behind the story of the piece, and the story behind the author who wrote it.

Where did the idea come from? What were they thinking during the writing process? Why did they delete a chapter, or change a character?

Find out the answers to these questions and more inside...

About the Author :
Mandy Haynes spent hours on barstools and riding in vans listening to great stories from some of the best songwriters and storytellers in Nashville, Tennessee. After her son graduated college, she traded a stressful life as a pediatric cardiac sonographer for a happy one and now spends her time writing and enjoying life as much as she can. She lives in Semmes, Alabama with her three dogs, one turtle, and helps take care of several more animals at Good Fortune Farm Refuge. She is a contributing writer for Amelia Islander Magazine, Amelia Weddings, author of two short story collections, Walking the Wrong Way Home, Sharp as a Serpent's Tooth Eva and Other Stories, and a novella, Oliver. She is also the editor of the anthology, Work in Progress, and co-editor of the Southern Writers Reading reunion anthology, The Best of the Shortest. Like the characters in some of her stories, she never misses a chance to jump in a creek to catch crawdads, stand up for the underdog, or the opportunity to make someone laugh. Mandy is founder and editor-in-chief of WELL READ Magazine, an online literary journal created to give authors affordable advertising options and a place where authors of all genres and writing backgrounds can submit their work for publication. Review :

"What a brilliant idea for a book! I enjoyed every entry, and was pleased to find work-in-progress by writers whose work I had read before, like Claire Fullerton, Kathleen Rodgers, Debra Thomas, Kathy L. Murphy, Susan Cushman, and Heather Frese, as well as selections by new-to-me writers such as an excerpt of Jan Moran's HEPBURN'S NECKLACE, a scene from THE ART OF TRAVELING STRANGERS by Zoe Disigny and the first chapter of Robert Gwaltney's atmospheric and delightfully weird Southern gothic novel-in-progress. And so much more! Brava to editor Mandy Haynes for putting together this winning collection!" Suzanne Kamata, author of The Baseball Widow

"These are some really great short stories by numerous authors and edited by Mandy Haynes. Very engaging," Karen Reed

"I loved this look into works of some pretty awesome authors!" Kimberly Packard, author of Dire's Club

"A fabulous anthology filled with bits of stories that'll make you want to read more from these authors." Linda Rosen, author of Sisters of the Vine
