Ein geheimnisvoller Rabe begleitet die achtjährige Kristina schon, seit sie als Neugeborenes vor einem Waisenhaus gefunden wurde. Sie wuchs dort auf, da niemand etwas über ihre Eltern herausfinden konnte. Ist sie ein Indianerkind? Ihre dunklen Haare und Augen scheinen dafür zu sprechen, aber ihre helle Haut, die auch in der Sonne Arizonas nicht bräunt, spricht dagegen. Bei einem Zwischenfall am nahen Fluss lernt sie Gaagi, einen Indianer aus dem Stamm der Navajo kennen. Er und einige seiner Leute sind auf der Flucht vor Soldaten, die alle Indianer in Reservate sperren wollen. Gerade als die Soldaten das Lager finden, führt Kristina, die von den Navajo - die sich selbst auch Diné nennen - Yas genannt wird, sie durch einen Wasserfall in eine andere Welt. Aufgrund einer Sonnenfinsternis öffnet sich dieser Durchgang und lässt die Diné mit Kristina passieren, doch die Soldaten kommen nicht mehr durch.In der neuen Welt versuchen sie sich zu orientieren. Gaagi zieht sich immer weiter zurück, er trauert um seine große Liebe, die er seit vielen Jahren nicht mehr gesehen hat. Yas kann gerade so seinen Selbstmord verhindern, aber als sie zurück zu ihrem Lager kommen, sind alle anderen verschwunden. Gaagi und Yas machen sich auf den Weg und suchen den verschwundenen Stamm. Unterwegs lernen sie die ihnen fremde Welt kennen, treffen auf verschiedene Persönlichkeiten. Gerade das Weltverständnis des Häuptlings wird immer wieder auf den Kopf gestellt, als sie zum Beispiel auf Kobolde und Greife treffen. Elfen und ein Baummensch helfen ihnen, ihr Ziel zu erreichen und den Stamm zu finden, der von Trollen gefangen gehalten wird. Um die Trolle zu besiegen, müssen sie den Schutz eines bösen Zauberers lösen, der verhindert, dass die Sonne die Trolle versteinert.Sie ziehen also zum Schloss des Zauberers Carimo und Gaagi stellt sich ihm zum Kampf, als plötzlich auch noch Yas entführt wird. Die Gefangenen des Zaubers, Elfen, Einhörner und Elementare, enthüllen Dinge, die niemand je geglaubt hätte.
