La vita poetica di Dante comincia con un sogno. Nel mezzo quasi della sua adolescenza, Dante incontrò per una via la giovinetta che gli era piaciuta bambina, e poi aveva veduta sovente. Egli stava molto pauroso; ed ella si volse a lui e gli mandò una parola di saluto. Dante ne fu inebriato e sentì il bisogno di essere solo e di pensare a lei. E rientrò in casa e si appartò nella sua camera, e s'addormì e sognò di lei. La sognò involta in un drappo, che dormiva, e non aveva altra veste che quel drappo (VN. 1-3). Era (come si dovrebbe credere seguendo il Boccaccio) il primo dì di maggio? e il sogno dell'adolescente era avvenuto tra quella dolcezza del cielo e tra quella varietà dei fiori, nella sera d'una festa? Dante, dal suo deboletto sonno, si svegliò innamorato; ma gli parve, come avviene, che l'amore fosse cominciato da un pezzo, sin da quando egli conosceva la gentile persona di che aveva sognato; e che il sogno gli desse soltanto, di quell'amore che cominciava in quel punto, la consapevolezza dopo tanto tempo che durava (VN. 4). Questo io leggo in quel libello che ognuno ha con sè, e può trovarvi scritte le parole che io vi trovo; e si chiama il libro dell'anima, e si legge con la memoria. Ricordiamo, dunque. Che cosa più spesso fu che trasformò d'un subito, nella nostra anima ancor pura, la fanciulla che ieri ci indugiavamo a guardare, nell'angiola che oggi non possiamo guardar più senza tremito e rossore? E quasi fuggiamo per non vederla più quel giorno, quasi vederla fosse fatica e dolore, e invece è gioia troppo viva, che va goduta a poco a poco; se no, fa male al cuore. Che cosa fu, se non qualche meteora che passò senza rumore sulla nostra anima sveglia, mentre il corpo dormiva? Bisogna, io penso talvolta, che la coscienza del nostro essere sia assopita, perchè noi concepiamo quella cosa soave e terribile che è l'amore.
