About the Book

Examine biodynamic skeletal therapy (BST) with guidance from its creator. Unwinding Bone is a comprehensive and practical resource on biodynamic skeletal therapy (BST), a gentle, non-manipulative approach that engages with bone as dynamic and responsive tissue. Author Scott Sternthal, DO, the developer of BST, simplifies complex theories in this accessible hands-on guide. The basis of BST is identifying and treating bones that have lost their natural elasticity and vitality. By focusing less on the movement of bones, and more on the movement within them, BST primes the skeleton for further manual treatment. Designed to be used as a tool by manual therapy practitioners, Unwinding Bone offers unparalleled insights into treating bone tissue and uses over 500 photos to visually depict the concepts and procedures in the text. The first half of the book discusses the theory behind BST, with a review of bone anatomy and composition, including bone development, remodeling, and mechanical behavior. The continuity between bone and fascia—the osseofascial continuum—is examined, as well as the concepts of biotensegrity, potency, fulcrum-lever systems, and the rhythms and textures of primary respiration. The second half of Unwinding Bone presents the practical guide, describing a step-by-step procedure for finding and treating osseofascial compactions in nearly every bone in the body. Written by a practitioner for practitioners, Unwinding Bone is an approachable guide to learning how to treat the quality and texture of bone tissue.

Review :
“Scott Sternthal has done manual therapy a service by getting his hands around the fascial structure within the bone. We are familiar with interosseous strain but have mostly ignored intraosseous and intrachondral strain patterning. By employing the principles of biodynamic osteopathy, this book shows how to unwind the fascial ‘leather’ in bone that remodels the scaffolding for the calcium apatite.” —Tom Myers, Author of Anatomy Trains
