About the Book

Like millions of others, Randy Hyshiver had his funny bone tickled and his spirit touched by the work of Robin Williams. They were two people living in the same metro area: the famous entertainer who was lightning fast at improvisation and the not-so-famous guy trying to make his life the best it could be. Hyshiver looked to the artistry of Robin Williams for life lessons. The author wanted to find the lightness and passion for life that Williams seemed to embody. And then Robin hung himself. Like millions of others, Hyshiver was profoundly shocked by the suicide of the actor and stand-up comic, but he didn't think that death negated the lessons of Williams' extraordinary life. Hyshiver wondered: If Williams chose death over life in spite of the tremendous advantages and adventures his career had brought him, how can the rest of us find our way? Given that life doesn't come with a compass, how do we find our way back home-to our true selves? Some people took to social media after the comic's suicide, trying to make sense of it and urging people to get help if they were suicidal. Hyshiver also began to write, exploring not so much why Robin died-he didn't have enough information-but rather why we lose our way and how we can live by choice rather than default. The result is Life Without A Compass, Finding True North.Robin was struggling with a devastating disease that could have affected his ability to think clearly-not the Parkinson's he had been diagnosed with, but rather a disease called diffuse Lewy body dementia that has some similar symptoms, according to his autopsy. Hallucinations from that dementia likely triggered his suicide, his doctors say. Williams had struggled with depression and addiction for years; he had survived heart problems, divorces (one with attendant sex scandal), and the death of friends, including acting school roommate Christopher Reeve. Life doesn't come with a compass and a set of instructions. If from the outside Williams lived such an extraordinary life, a life that won him prestigious awards and gave him funds to support multiple causes, did internal suffering have to be its price? What can we learn from the fact that Williams produced transcendent work in spite of his struggles? What makes each life ordinary or extraordinary, according to the definition of the person living it? How can we find a path that makes us eager to discover the next section of trail? What do we do if we lose our way? Does modern life induce some degree of post-traumatic stress disorder in most of us, and what do we do about that? Those are among the questions explored in Life Without A Compass, Finding True North.
