About the Book

An enthralling dual-timeline WWII family mystery, based on the heartbreaking true story of the massacre in a small town in Italy in July of 1945, from award-winning, bestselling novelist Sandro Martini.

Some griefs come one at a time. Alex Lago does not get that luxury.

Eight weeks after burying his mother, a doctor finds him in a hospital waiting room and delivers news that hollows out whatever is left. His father is dying. His marriage is fraying. His daughter has gone quiet. And somewhere between driving too fast and commuting through the fog-draped corners of Northern Italy, he finds something in a shoebox that was never meant to be found.

A photograph. Four men. Snow. 1943.

What begins as a search for a missing uncle pulls Sandro into a buried world of wartime secrets, political crimes, and a woman who will do anything to keep the past exactly where it is. As the layers peel back, the truth behind the photograph reaches further and darker than he ever imagined, stretching from the frozen Russian steppe all the way to the blood-soaked summer of 1945.

But the past is never content to stay silent. And the closer Sandro gets to the truth, the more he understands that some silences were engineered, some heroes were manufactured, and some wars never actually ended.

Aching and furious, precise and devastating, this is literary fiction for anyone who has ever loved someone they never quite learned to reach. Can you mourn a man you never fully knew while the world he lived in crumbles around you? Get your copy today before the price changes.

About the Author :
Sandro Martini has worked as a word monkey on three continents. He's the author of Tracks: Racing the Sun, an award-winning historical novel. He grew up in Africa to immigrant parents, studied law in Italy, chased literary dreams in London, hustled American dollars in New York City, and is now hiding out in Switzerland, where he moonlights as a Comms guy and tries hard not to speak German. You can find him either uber-driving his daughter, chasing faster cars on the autobahn, or swimming in Lake Zurich with a cockapoo named Tintin.

Review :

"A gripping saga that roots excruciating betrayals in a nation's tragic history." -Kirkus Reviews

"Balances action, suspense, and emotional depth to deliver a truly immersive, thought-provoking read with an unflinching look at the sins of the past and the lengths to which the powerful will go to keep them buried." -Sublime Book Review
