Gracias al talento de ingenieros como Thomas Telford (1757-1834), Thomas Farnolls Pritchard (1723-1777), Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), Joseph Strauss (1870-1938) y, más recientemente, Michel Virlogeux (1946), hoy en día disfrutamos de puentes que siguen fascinándonos y que nos permiten desplazarnos o transportar mercancías, acortando distancias y tiempo. Pero a ello también contribuyeron la imaginación, las ideas peregrinas o la capacidad visionaria de mentes brillantes como la del polifacético genio renacentista Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), cuyos bocetos de puentes incluían el famoso puente autoportante o el puente giratorio.
