About the Book

The Second World War has been over for fifteen years, but it's still being fought--in the mind of Michel's Russian stepfather George Pushkin. He's been targeted for assassination by Stalin; at least that's what he believes, though Stalin has been dead for seven years. Taken prisoner by the Germans during the war, George later fought with the Germans as a member of the Russian Liberation Army, Russian citizens committed to freeing their country from Soviet rule. Now, in 1960, he is convinced his homeland is after him. Michel, who is almost fifteen -- conceived just as the war was ending -- is on the cusp of manhood but is being kept a prisoner by his stepfather's occasional brutality and constant paranoia. An imaginative, even dreamy boy -- at home in the world of books and films -- and fed since childhood on the stories of his mother who has turned her horrendous past into a series of cautionary fairy tales -- he sees his stepfather as an ogre, gnashing his teeth on the bones of his victims. A coming of age story unlike any other, THE BOY AND THE OGRE relates the flight to freedom, as Michel struggles against the physical and psychological strictures of his stepfather, as George Pushkin takes his family to America, only to find he has brought his demons with him. Written in a style that mixes first and third person and the mainstream novel with the fairy tale, it is alive at every moment to the electric consciousness of its teenage hero, who is on a voyage of discovery--the world of knowledge, of self-fulfillment, and of sexuality are all about to open for him.
