About the Book

The story is based on a young man named Allen Greer, who from a very young age has been smitten with a young lady named Debbie Moore. He was the captain of the football team, and she was the head cheerleader. Allen who was well liked in school didn't have the nerve to speak to her, and feeling the same as him she couldn't bring herself to speak to him either. Well with their final school year nearly at a close Debbie mustarded up the courage to speak to him knowing it would be her last chance to do so. She approached him after school while getting on his motorcycle and asked him to follow her to the Tasty Freeze. Of course he did and taking the time to know each other better he was happy that he had. A few hours into their conversation Allen felt comfortable asking her out on a date for that Saturday night, but he soon learned that she had to clear it with her parents first. Escorting her to her car Allen was full of excitement as he climbed on his bike and headed off for home. However he was going to find that his father wasn't happy because he had chores that needed to be done after school that he'd completely forgotten. Angry his father in a fit of rage quickly informed him that he wasn't going on a date with anyone on the following Saturday. Allen felt like his father was being totally unfair, and being ordered to take out the trash he came up with the idea to just run off. Walking into the garage he kicked over the trash can before pushing his bike up the street and jumping on it. With Debbie being the only thing on his mind he decided to go see her, but pulling up in front of her house he could hear and see her being jumped on through the window by her mother. Hearing them fight over their doomed date Allen was distraught and he knew he had to do something. Getting on his bike it began to drizzle when it dawned on him how he could look cool to Debbie and teach his father a lesion. He decided to go to the store for supplies before going and hiding out for a few days, where he spent his earlier years in life on the old family farm. Allen went straight to the store and after a little difficulty he managed to find everything he needed to survive for a few days on his own. After leaving the store the drizzle turned into a downpour, and unable to see more than a few feet in front of his bike he hit a pothole that sent him over his handlebars and skidding down the road. He was soon found and taken to the hospital where he laid in a coma for three years, and when he awoke he learned that Debbie had moved on with her life. Unable to deal with the loss of Debbie he moved to his uncle's home in Illinois, and over the course of seven years he got married and had two twin sons. Allen was happy with his life and job, but he still had many what ifs in his life from his past. Burdened by his past he began to have nightmares of his mother begging him to wake up. He tried for several days to reach his parents by phone but with no luck he knew he had to drive to Elizabethtown to check on them. Allen and his best friend head out together but after several hours on the interstate they get hit by a semi, leaving him to believe he is just waking up from his coma for the first time. However he isn't waking for the first time, but reliving his life from the point in time which he'd moved away. Throughout his ordeal he meets and falls in love with a woman who looks just like his assumed coma wife, and finding Debbie now available he soon learns that his life in Illinois was perfect just the way it was. After waking up and learning he'd been in an Illinois hospital the whole time he speaks to his father and learns he knows things he couldn't have known. With his family surrounding him and learning that his friend was okay, Allen concluded that he didn't have any more what ifs in his life. I'm Marshall W. Pilkenton.
