About the Book

“Drew may have lived many years among the Yanks, but his Mississippi roots are having their say, shining through in every irreverent/reverent syllable. Once you pick this book up, you won't be putting it down any time soon!” - Nancy White

THE DOWN AND DIRTY REDNECK HUNGERS FOR THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
I've always been afraid of burning to death,
but with you I was like a tree in October,
on fire with a shitload of leaves just
before the north wind ripped them loose
and sent them ass over teacup earthward. Girl,
if only you would come again driving
down Main Street, your long golden hair
streaming out the window like yellow flames,
your white Mustang unstained as you was,
I wouldn't give a damn about how I go,
only that the crash when it comes rivals
them leaves up to their stems in duff,
and that one day we can look back and say
okay, we crashed, but we crashed still burning.

About the Author :
George Drew was born in Mississippi and raised there and now lives in Poestenkill in New York State, USA. He is the author of five collections of poetry, including The View from Jackass Hill, the 2010 winner of the X.J. Kennedy Poetry Prize, from Texas Review Press.

Review :
"'Right on, well done, George Drew!' I hear Walt Whitman say. We've been waiting, god-dammit, for another rhapsode to take up the work of Whiteman and Hart Crane, to continue on that American tear. And here we have to wry, laconic, maligned redneck telling us how it is, and it ain't like the papers say it is. Drew is a noble successor to Whitman, Crane, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash."
--Djelloul Marbrook "He can get down, and he can get dirty, but when George Drew does both together, the result is a music that hauls the reader in by the overall strap and demands some dancing. Drew's work ranges from philosophy to hilarity, and in this collection we get to see him cut loose. His meditations on the state of the world come in the form of a rant on the subject of a 'smug yuppie sonofabitch, ' in the tale of his Redneck's one sampling of heroin out in the graveled parking lot of the Church of the Holy Innocents, in a peon to quick death: 'I want the whole huge ass-kicking mother / of a galaxy to wrap me in its spiral arms....' Drew may have lived many years among the Yanks, but his Mississippi roots are having their say, shining through in every irreverent/reverent syllable. Once you pick this book up, you won't be putting it down any time soon!"
--Nancy White
