About the Book

Bestselling author of Barbarians at the Gates and Public Enemies, Bryan Burrough is also a three-time winner of the John Hancock Award for excellence in journalism. In The Big Rich, Burrough reveals how four larger-than-life Texas oil tycoons transformed 20th-century America.

Rising from humble beginnings through hard work and shrewd dealings, Roy Cullen, H. L. Hunt, Clint Murchison, and Sid Richardson forged the Lone Star State's wealthiest oil dynasties. Their influence shifted the balance of power in American politics, sending three Texans to the White House and bankrolling the modern conservative movement. While hobnobbing with presidents and movie stars, the Big Rich created the legend of the swaggering Texas oilman with island hideaways, sprawling ranches, and long-horned Cadillacs.

About the Author :
Bryan Burrough is the author of six books, including The Big Rich, Days of Rage, Public Enemies, and the No. 1 New York Times bestseller Barbarians at the Gate. Chris Tomlinson is a columnist for the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News and the author of the New York Times-bestselling Tomlinson Hill about his family's slave-owning history in Texas. From 1995-2007, he reported from more than 30 countries and nine wars for the Associated Press. Jason Stanford is a writer whose bylines have appeared in Texas Monthly, the Austin-American Statesman, the Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, the Texas Tribune, and Texas Highways. The former communications director for Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Stanford previously worked as a political consultant and helped elect or re-elect more than 30 members of congress. He now publishes a weekly newsletter called The Experiment. James Jenner is an actor known for Very Good Girls, Enemy Territory, and Third Watch.

Review :

"An entertaining look at the larger-than-life histories of the incomprehensibly rich and powerful. While it's an extensively researched synthesis of a time and a place, it avoids a dry, academic tone through the natural drama of these miniature empires and the truly bizarre characters that inhabit them."

-- "Library Journal"

"Burrough...invokes a tale of bitter competition, family feuds, booms, and bankruptcies that more than lives up to the legends."

-- "Booklist (starred review)"

"Capitalism at its most colorful oozes across the pages of this engrossing study...This is a portrait of capitalism as white-knuckle risk taking, yielding fruitful discoveries for the fathers, but only sterile speculation for the sons--a story that resonates with today's economic upheaval."

-- "Publishers Weekly (starred review)"
