About the Book

The best-selling author of Snow Falling on Cedars returns to his Pacific Northwest settings-and moves beyond them-in ten sharply observed, funny, and wise new stories that explore the mysteries of love, and unravel our complex desires to connect with others. Ranging from teenage to middle-age, the voices that inhabit Problems with People offer humorous or searing but always tightly focused accounts of the universal quest to understand one another-individually, and as part of our political and historical moment. Their stories are sometimes shot through with tragedy-the long-ago loss of a young boyfriend, a son's death at sea-while in others, the mere circumstances of our cultures and selves-whether it is being Jewish; overweight and single; a tourist in a history-haunted land; or on the brink of a diminished old age-prompt questions about our sense of reality and belonging. Spanning diverse geographies-across America and in distant countries including Nepal, South Africa, and Germany-these stories showcase Guterson's signature gifts for characterization, psychological nuance, emotional suspense, and evocation of the natural world. They celebrate the small, unexpectedly brightening surprises that lurk within the dramas of our daily lives.

About the Author :
David Guterson is an American author and educator best known for his novel Snow Falling on Cedars, which won the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award and was adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 1999. In addition to his writing and teaching career, he is also the cofounder of Field's End, a community organization for writers in Washington. Mark Zeisler has a rich theater background, having grown up in the business. His father founded the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and was the longtime executive director of the Theatre Communications Group. Mark has appeared on Broadway in A View of the Bridge and Brooklyn Boy, and has worked at numerous theaters across the country. He has appeared in many films, including Shaft, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Head of State, as well TV shows, including Law and Order, Third Watch, and Rescue Me. George Guidall has recorded over 1,700 audiobooks and is the recipient of many AudioFile Earphones Awards and two Audie Awards for Excellence in Audiobook Narration, as well as a Special Achievement Award in 2014 from the Audio Publishers Association. His forty-year acting career includes starring roles on Broadway, an Obie Award for best performance off Broadway, and frequent television appearances. T. Ryder Smith is a narrator whose audiobook readings have won the prestigious Audie Award for best narration as well as several AudioFile Earphones Awards. As an award-winning actor, he has appeared on Broadway in Equus and in many off-Broadway shows including Passion Play, Dead Man's Cell Phone, and Lebensraum, for which he won a Drama Desk Award. He has also made numerous television appearances on series such as Nurse Jackie, Blue Bloods, Law & Order: SVU, and others.

Review :

"The distinct narrative voices of George Guidall, T. Ryder Smith, and Mark Zeisler contribute a welcome variation to David Guterson's new story collection, which is about angst, hubris, longing, and the missed opportunities we call life. Guidall is rounded and rich, Smith straight-ahead crisp, and Zeisler pleasant, with a hint of Midwest openness--dissimilar, but not so different as to be dissonant. Despite widely varied settings and protagonists, the tone of the slice-of-life stories has a certain sameness. Thus, the benefit of three narrators, each of whom honors Guterson's signature nuance and insight, while adding his own interpretation and rhythm. Between them, the author and narrators have created a fine and thoughtful audiobook."
