About the Book

After more than two decades of research at Harvard Medical School, clinical psychologist William Pollack concludes that our sons are in trouble. In this provocative study, as he examines the causes of this crisis, Dr. Pollack offers ways we can help boys grow up into healthy adults. Just as Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia offers hope for troubled adolescent girls, Real Boys is an invaluable work. An unwritten "Boy Code" perpetuates the myths that boys are driven by testosterone and other uncontrollable forces and that boys are inherently dangerous. As a result of these beliefs, boys are taught to conceal their emotions from others, keep their distance in relationships, and be tough. Dr. Pollack's book offers healthier attitudes to replace this damaging Code. As Dr. Pollack discusses each of the myths of boyhood, he uses case studies to show how we can help boys understand and deal with such issues as anger, sexuality, peer pressure, and self-image. A New York Times best-seller, Real Boys provides critical information that everyone should have.

Review :

"A thoughtful and sensitive discussion of contemporary American boyhood."

-- "Dr. Robert Coles, author of The Moral Intelligence of Children "

"Anyone who lives or works with boys and men should read Real Boys."

-- "Gail Sheehy"

"Just as Reviving Ophelia opened our eyes to the challenges faced by adolescent girls, Real Boys helps us hear and respond to the needs of growing boys."

-- "Judith Jordan, Harvard Medical School "

"Lucidly written...Enlightening and stimulating."

-- "Publishers Weekly "

"Pollack is an academic, not an actor, and his narration isn't as polished as it might be, but he speaks with authority and has a reassuring, rather than berating, tone. Parents will be able to identify with his easy manner and will appreciate his sensible advice for helping their sons remove the mask."

-- "AudioFile"

"Pollack...has been thinking hard about the contemporary masculine condition for over a decade...It is perhaps no overstatement to suggest that the contemporary American view of childhood has been clouded...Real Boys is a thoughtful step in clearing the ideological air."

-- "Richard A. Hawley, New England Journal of Medicine " "I wish I had read Real Boys when my son was a boy."-- "Mary Pipher, PhD"
