About the Book

El interés suscitado por la desaparición a finales del siglo XX, de la manzana y la retícula, del paisaje cultural, arquitectónico y urbanístico de nuestras ciudades, y su vuelta con determinadas invariantes a finales de los 60, han sido considerados los motivos de esta investigación. Por ello, considerándolos como fundamentales, se parte de la idea de manzana y retícula, haciendo una revisión introductoria del concepto de tipo y del de la forma, normalmente entendidos desde la naturaleza de la obra arquitectónica, que se precisa extender al urbanismo, y que sirven de herramienta para el desarrollo de las observaciones realizadas. Se estudian los desarrollos de la ciudad moderna, y sus planificadores, a partir de las nuevas ideas que representaban la ciudad-jardín, y su conversión en la Alemania de los años 20 en Siedlungen como origen de un tipo nuevo: el bloque moderno, estudiando su evolución y su conceptualización a través de los preceptos desarrollados por los Congresos Internacionales de Arquitectura Moderna [CIAM], hasta llegar a su caída una vez superada la 2a Guerra Mundial, por la simple evolución de las ideas del enfoque funcionalista, dominante desde los años 20 a los 60, que desde los CIAM se preconizaban, dado que la realidad de la Carta de Atenas, que buscaba una sociedad ordenada, sana y armoniosa, provocaba sin embargo una importante perdida del espacio urbano por su indefinición. Italia constituye la continuidad del estudio, con las discusiones comenzadas años antes, por arquitectos jóvenes en torno al denominado TEAM X. Los arquitectos italianos de los 50, que consideraban esencial lo histórico, y entienden las relaciones que se dan entre los tipos edificatorios y la determinación de las formas urbanas efectúan lo que podríamos denominar una revolución de las ideas, que también se analiza. Y por último el estudio del redescubrimiento de un esquema organizador teóricamente apto, que supuestamente hace recuperar la urbanidad perdida, como es el trazado reticular y la manzana cerrada, que constituye hoy el tipo mayoritario de desarrollo urbano de nuestras ciudades y en concreto de Madrid.
