About the Book

The most ancient form of prayer is probably petition. Scot McKnight has set out to understand this better, and guide pray-ers and churches to reinvigorate their practice of asking God. To You All Hearts Are Open begins with the Collects of the Book of Common Prayer –  timeless prayers that have been used by Christians for centuries, are rooted in the Catholic tradition of prayer, and are deeply biblical. These prayers common to churches of nearly every denomination illustrate five elements of prayer itself: addressing God, asking God, reminding God of how God has acted in the past, expecting God to answer, and accessing God through Christ. They are the Bible’s pattern of petitioning God which Scot McKnight seeks to rediscover a reliable path to relationship and true conversation with God.

About the Author :
Scot McKnight has been married for 47 years, a professor for nearly 40 years, and an author of more than 80 books. His books from Paraclete include the bestseller, The Jesus Creed; Praying with the Church; and To You All Hearts are Open.

Review :
“Don’t just pray. Pray with purpose. Scot McKnight invites the church to rediscover the power and practice of asking God. If you are looking for a refreshing introduction to petitionary prayer that is rooted in the Great Tradition and deeply biblical, this book is for you.” —Dr. Winfield Bevins, Director of Church Planting at Asbury Seminary, author of Ever Ancient Ever New “Scot McKnight has once again proven himself an eminently capable guide in matters of Christian faith and practice. To You All Hearts Are Open offers the Christian community a simple yet elegant introduction to petitionary prayer through the prayers of scripture and the wisdom of church tradition. I look forward to giving this powerful little book as a gift, especially to my students. They, like the rest of us, often struggle to pray, having never been taught precisely how. May God use this book to instruct all who find themselves asking, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’” —The Rev. Canon Emily H. McGowin, PhD, Assistant Professor of Theology, Wheaton College "Scot McKnight's To You All Hearts Are Open brims with the warmth of a teacher who loves his subject matter and his students. In simple prose, McKnight uses the collects of the church to remind us of God's character and God's deep desire for the world. After a year of heartache, McKnight's book made me grateful and hopeful. More than this, it moved me to pray." —Jerusha Matsen Neal, Assistant Professor of Homiletics, Duke Divinity School “This is a rich book, illustrating the beauty, power, and need for prayer. Readers will find themselves challenged and encouraged to rediscover the pattern of petitionary prayer and to revitalize it in their personal lives and in their congregational life.” —Lisa M. Bowens, PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary, author of African American Readings of Paul
