About the Book

Part storytelling masterclass, part personal transformation guide, The B-Plot shows readers how the setbacks they never wanted become the story that changes everything.

What if the life you're chasing isn't the story that changes you?

In every great film, there are two narratives: the A-Plot--what the character thinks they want--and the B-Plot--the deeper story that transforms them. In The B Plot, writer and creative director Tim Dyer reveals how this same dynamic also shapes our lives.

We spend years pursuing the A-Plot--success, achievement, the life we planned. But beneath the surface, another story is unfolding. The B-Plot is the one we don't choose--the setbacks, disruptions, and unexpected turns that challenge us, reshape us, and ultimately reveal who we are becoming.

Through powerful storytelling, personal experience, and insights drawn from film, literature, and leadership, Dyer invites readers into the "writer's room" of their own lives. Here, you'll begin to see that life doesn't happen to you--it happens for you: for your growth, your transformation, and your ultimate good.

More than a book, The B Plot is a guide to reinterpreting your life through a new lens. With interactive exercises, reflection prompts, and downloadable tools, readers will begin to uncover the deeper narrative already at work--and start to reclaim and reframe their own story.

Because the most meaningful story of your life isn't the one you're chasing. It's the one that's been chasing you all along.

About the Author :
Tim Dyer is Chief Storyteller of Manifesto, a creative and strategy agency that rallies people around the heart and soul of the world's most ambitious brands. Under his creative leadership, Manifesto became one of the fastest-growing agencies in the United States, ranking #124 on the Inc. 500 list and partnering with dozens of Fortune 500 companies.

Tim spent years shaping stories for some of the world's biggest brands only to realize he wasn't fully living his own.

This insight--that clarity of story precedes meaningful change--became the foundation of his work. He is the author of Rally Cry: 5 Reasons You Need a Manifesto, a widely used framework that helps organizations define what they stand for and why. He speaks frequently on storytelling, meaning-making, and the power of intentional narratives to unlock personal and professional transformation.

In 2025, Tim joined the writing team for Season Two of Angel Studios' breakout series Homestead and is currently developing a slate of original television and film projects. Outside of work, he writes poetry, spends time in the outdoors, and galvanizes groups of men around the topics of purpose and wisdom.

Review :
"A lot of people out there are feeling something they don't have words for, which is why a song helps give language to those feelings. I believe The B Plot does the same for readers. We all had an idea of what our story should look like, then life happened, and we got discouraged by what it brought us instead. I believe readers will close these pages with more hope for their own B-Plot. I've spent a lot of time looking back at the pages of my life wishing I could rewrite them, but reading this book gave me a new sense of joy. My story isn't finished; it's still being written, one tomorrow at a time. You'll find a new lens for your own story here."

--Phillip LaRue, Musician and Songwriter

"As a lifelong storyteller, I understand the story we so often forget is how to tell our own. The B Plot helped me reframe the story I thought I was living. Think of it as story coaching wrapped in cinema, poetry, and hard-won truth. Tim reveals that the most important story in your life isn't the one everyone sees--it's the quieter one unfolding beneath the surface. Once you recognize your B-Plot, you'll never look at your past, your setbacks, or your future the same way again."

--Ben Arment, Author of Dream Year

"As someone who's experienced both great gains and losses in life, I resonated deeply with Tim's evocative mid-life memoir. If you've found yourself wondering what's next or are waiting for direction in life, this book will give you the eyes to see that the setbacks are not throwaway scenes, but instead, the deeper story that's been unfurling all along."

--John DeMoss, Serial Entrepreneur and Cofounder, OXGN

"Every unforgettable story resonates because of something deeper happening beneath the surface. In this remarkable book, Tim Dyer gives language to that hidden narrative, revealing a powerful framework that will forever change the way you experience great stories--and perhaps even the story of your own life."

--Ben Kasica, Executive Producer of Homestead (Angel Studios)

"I'm a sucker for an idea that's simple enough to explain in a sentence but powerful enough to change the way you see your life. The B Plot is one of those ideas. Tim Dyer has taken a storytelling principle and turned it into a practical framework for navigating real life. Once you see it, you'll start recognizing your B-Plot everywhere."

--Jon Acuff, New York Times Bestselling Author of Procrastination Proof

"I've always looked for the B-Plot in the characters I create--the unexpected moments that reveal who they really are--but I never stopped to consider that I have my own B-Plot unfolding in life. This book challenged me to see those unexpected detours, opportunities, and relationships differently. It didn't just change how I think about storytelling; it changed how I think about my own story."

--Chris Guerra, Former Artistic Director of The Groundlings

"In any hero's journey, the real change is forged in the descent rather than the summit. It happens in the setbacks and the hardships, where we choose to overcome adversity rather than retreat from it. Tim Dyer has written the guidebook I wish someone had handed me twenty years ago, and it should be mandatory reading for any storyteller."

--Jason Pamer, Producer of After Death, the Highest-grossing Spiritual Documentary

"In the first few pages of this well-wrought, inspirational little book, I was hooked. It is candid when appropriate, compelling when least expected, and poignant at just the right moments. Dyer seamlessly weaves together autobiography with fiction, drawing lessons both from his own lived experience and the experience of some of our favorite film characters--something refreshingly new. This playful, insightful little read pulled back the curtain and helped me to see my own B-Plot. And that's no small thing. It's a gift for which I am truly grateful."

--Tim Kirk, Academic and Communication Arts Instructor

"True wisdom can't be learned; it must be earned. In The B Plot, master storyteller Tim Dyer guides the reader through personal successes and failures, endless peaks and valleys, light-bulb moments and dark nights of the soul, inviting us to engage our stories not as victims but as authors of redemption. The B Plot is a must-read for anyone who wonders, Could there be more?"

--Shane J. Wood, Bestselling Author of Thinning the Veil: Encountering Jesus Christ in the Book of Revelation

Tim writes about struggle, redemption and transformation with the kind of vulnerability that makes you want to lean in. The B Plot is a book for anyone in the middle of a chapter they didn't ask for, which is pretty much all of us. As someone who leads a congregation rooted in recovery, I believe this book was made for people who want to see their life story with a new lens.

--Ryan Canaday, Lead Pastor and Executive Director of FREE Recovery Community
