About the Book

Published monthly since 2010, the Word of the Month is a short, irreverent focus on terms in the headlines. The format combines original artwork along with words, definitions, examples and expressions from members of the Gymglish creative team. Each monthly entry is translated into French, German and Spanish, though the goal is to amuse and educate the reader with accessible, practical, modern English. The Word of the Month appears on its own website: thewordofthemonth.com, as well as in partnership with LeMonde.fr. A Word of the Month App is available for IOs and Android, as well as a premium version, WordFlashback for those wishing to build and revise vocabulary and expressions. Gymglish creates fun, personalized online language courses. About the Author :
The lead author of Gymglish's creative content since 2004, Andrew has very clearly lost sight of any sort of legitimate career path. A native of San Francisco, Andrew joined the Gymglish team in Paris as a freelancer, after a year of teaching English in South Korea. He has a degree in Language Arts and Creative Writing from the Johnston Center of Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands. His meteoric rise to the middle resulted from contributing voices, ideas, scripts and pedagogical content to Gymglish's language courses. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys reading, writing, cooking, travelling and wondering what might have been. He lives with a hound (Shelgor) and a socialist cat (Buster) in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. He remains cautiously optimistic that he will someday find meaning. Andrew is the main author of the Word of the Month, contributing words and ideas. Co-founder of the company, and entrepreneur by trade, Ben founded Gymglish in 2004 with Antoine Brenner, with one reasonable goal in mind: to have fun daily. Despite warnings from friends, family and lawyers that this was decidedly unreasonable, he persisted in the endeavor. With an engineering degree he rarely uses, Ben also graduated from the H.E.C Entrepreneurs program, (Motto: Where networking meets nepotism). Before launching Gymglish, Antoine and Ben founded Alinka, creating something called Linux clusters that he can't totally explain to this day. Outside of the office, Ben enjoys surfing, languages, meeting people and going on adventures that take him off the beaten path. He despises social media and news channels, making the Word of the Month the perfect format for him. Ben still has fun daily working with the talented and dynamic Gymglish team. Ben is the main editor of the Word of the Month, and contributes words and ideas. With a background in TEFL teaching and originally from England, Jim is now a proud French passport holder. He joined Gymglish in 2007, initially writing scripts and pedagogical material, then broadening his scope to include illustration, animation, song and music composition and video editing. Before joining the Gymglish gravy train, he worked in an e-learning resource centre with no windows. He is also a music composer with a bachelor's degree in Music and Music Technology from York University and a Master of Music degree in Composing for Film and Television from the London College of Music and Media. Jim has released two pop albums under the pseudonym Hard Working Boss and acts in the Anglophone Theatre scene in Paris. Jim is the principal illustrator behind the cartoons of the Word of the Month, and contributes words and ideas.
