About the Book

The Essential Source for Working with Native Tree Species This Echo Point book is available in two styles: an economical color paperback edition (search ISBN 1635618959) for the budget-conscious and a durable, high-quality color hardcover (search ISBN 1635618991) for those who wish to add lasting value to their library. With Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines, acclaimed horticulturalist and bestselling author William Cullina continues his authoritative three-part series on the native species of North America. This user-friendly guide encourages the concept of ecological gardening by working with strictly native flora, and presents a trove of helpful information with lively, easily accessible prose. This encyclopedic guide to temperate North American woody plants covers nearly one thousand native varieties, arranged alphabetically by genus and species. Writing with enjoyable, easy-to-read language and drawing from a deep wellspring of personal experience, Cullina discusses all of the important details you need to select and cultivate each species, including their taxonomic and genetic data, Latin name pronunciations, optimal geographic ranges, soil needs, light and habitat requirements, information about pruning and diseases, and propagation difficulty ratings. It also notes the value of each species for attracting wildlife and highlights the threat of invasive species. Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines is also beautifully illustrated with over 400 color photographs of each genus, and includes recommendations detailing conditions under which various species thrive. Cullina is also passionate about environmentally-responsible native plant landscaping and gives valuable advice with the larger environment in mind. This book is an indispensable resource for any landscape designer or home gardener's library. Also available from Echo Point Books is William Cullina's Native Ferns, Moss, and Grasses, in hardcover (search ISBN 163561855X) or paperback (search ISBN 1635618967).

Review :
"[Native Trees, Shrubs, & Vines is] an important book for professional nurserymen. Cullina also writes so well that this is the rare encyclopedia that can be read for pleasure. This handsome well-designed volume is an excellent value." -- Review "This is one of those exceedingly rare reference books that you'll find yourself consulting simply for the pleasure of its prose. Hard to believe an authoritative reference to America's trees and shrubs didn't already exist, but now that it docs, it's indispensable.' MICHAEL POLLAN, author of Botany of Desire "For all of us who love the natural world, William Cullina's book is both a delightful read and an essential reference. If you want to attract birds and butterflies to your garden, this is an invaluable guide to the specific plants that will support them." KENN KAUFMAN, author of Lives of North American Birds "William Cullina is an expert horticulturist. His new reference book. Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines, along with its predecessor, Growing and Propagating Wildflowers, belongs in the library of every American gardener.'" KEN DRUSE, author of Making More Plants: The Science. Art, and Joy of Propagation "William Cullina's wildflower book had only one fault, which was that it excluded woody plants. Now this wonderful new book, written with the same grace, clarity, erudition, and deep hands-on experience, will quickly join Wildflowers as the essential reference for anyone interested in our native flora." WAYNE WINTERROWD, coauthor of Year at North Hill "Cullina ... writes so well that this is the rare encyclopedia that can be read for pleasure. This handsome well-designed volume is an excellent value." -Boston Globe
