About the Book

Controller is the story of a new staff member coming to the UN Secretariat from the Soviet government service. His exploration of the new surroundings from the conference halls of the famous UN building in Manhattan to places far away from public eyes. You will travel with the author to Golan Heights, East Timor, Sierra Leone, Eritrea and other troublesome corners of the planet. You will find out what the UN does in different areas of the world. From economic assistance to peacekeeping to humanitarian assistance to international criminal justice. Told from the unique perspective of the UN's internal auditor.

About the Author :
Sergei Shishkin has an unusual biography. He earned his PhD in Economics from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in the former Soviet Union. He then worked as Market Analyst with the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Trade. Then his career took a sudden turn and he became an auditor with the Soviet Ministry of Finance. In 1982 he was selected to work for the United Nations Secretariat where his career in internal audit spanned for twenty-two years. Upon retirement in 2007, he began to write on global economics and his audit experience in both Soviet government civil service and the UN. His first book, Economics for the Non-economist, was published in 2016.

"Read this book to know the UN very well indeed." --Barry M. Cohen, Ph.D., Organizational Psychologist "Through detailed analysis of the activities conducted by the UN oversight services Sergei Shishkin is giving an impressive panorama of the whole United Nations." --Igor Khalevinsky, Chairman, Association of Russian Diplomats, Member of the Committee of Experts on Public Administration, the United Nations Economic and Social Council "The book gives a unique insight to the function of the United Nation's operation, a relatively unknown area." --Dr. Laszlo Adler, Taine McDougal Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University "An honor to read this fascinating book about the UN and the life of Mr. Sergei Shishkin who left comfort and safety to alleviate the suffering of others. In this time when President Trump is downplaying the importance of the UN I found this an intriguing and enlightening book." --Barbara McNally, Author of Wounded Warrior, Wounded Wife "Through detailed analysis of the activities conducted by the UN oversight services Sergei Shishkin is giving an impressive panorama of the whole United Nations. His deep knowledge and understanding of all shades and facets of the UN activities is amazing! Great Auditor and Hard Worker, he adhered to the UN professional principles and standards. He rightly insists on the UN belonging to all of us." --Igor Khalevinsky, Chairman, Association of Russian Diplomats, Member of the Committee of Experts on Public Administration, the United Nations Economic and Social Council "This insider book offers a fascinating perspective of the United Nations that is not available elsewhere. It was written by Sergei Shishkin, who worked as an internal auditor of the United Nations Secretariat for twenty-two years. A Russian national and a former employee of the Ministry of Finance of the USSR, Mr. Shishkin provides expert insight into a broad range of UN activities from 1982 to 2009. These include various peacekeeping, humanitarian and environmental operations, as well as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. --Ellen Ratner, Bureau Chief, Talk Media News and Contributor, Fox News Channel
