About the Book

Skye Hato is an Asian-American teacher who works as a first year art teacher at a black inner-city high school. Despite constant challenges, Skye refuses to turn apathetic like the other teachers. Skye witnesses student fights, students selling drugs in her classroom, and prostitution in the school bathroom, and endures constant racism towards her. She even gets physically assaulted by a student. As the months of challenges continue, Skye sees a glimmer of hope from a few students who try to do well in class, but are not afforded the opportunities to advance due to poverty and status. Filled with a sense of justice, she reports the unsafety and dangers of the school to the School District. The principal, Ms. Hellinher retaliates against Skye for her complaints, and intentionally sets her up for failure because Skye doesn't succumb to the pressure of changing grades for students that failed her class. Skye tries to teach and change her students to make them better individuals but instead, it changes her for the worse. This story is based on true events, and has an ending that gives readers a sense of hope and purpose despite the negative experiences.

Review :
"The story compelled me to think about different racial dynamics in public education. Each chapter built up tension of what Skye Hato, the teacher, experienced, and I felt her despair in the classroom, and how toxic the environment was. This book gave insight about the difficult challenges teachers deal with in similar real life situations. - Sylvia Laurent, Photographer" Raiden Kayo holds back nothing to expose readers to the toxic realities of teaching in an inner city school culture. What hopeful educator could anticipate and what academic institution could prepare a would-be teacher for these classroom dynamics? Kayo raises more questions for higher education professors, superintendents, and politicians to seek and affect change. - Claire Norberg, Teacher This is a very gripping story that illustrates real life experiences as a teacher in the public school system in a low income area. It reflects the hope and reality that teachers, who teach in these horrific conditions with little or no resources, can persevere and continue to make a difference in the lives of students. - C. Weaver, Professor
