This comprehensive commentary explores the core of Pauline theology, touching on themes of righteousness, church unity, justification, and the application of faith in our daily lives. As the newest addition to the Reformed Expository Commentary series, this book will teach and encourage all readers and inspire pastors in their own expository preaching ministry. Review :
"Among those whom I regard as trustworthy, scholarly, and highly accessible interpreters of Scripture, my longtime friend Dan Doriani tops the list. Dan has this wonderful way of drawing out the meaning of any text from its original author in context, and then bridging it seamlessly into current life. The next time I teach through Romans, this exceptional resource will be my first go-to. I recommend the same for any other serious student of Scripture and follower of Christ."--Scott Sauls, Senior Pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church, Nashville; author, Jesus Outside the Lines and A Gentle Answer
"Dan Doriani, a veteran and wise professor and pastor, clearly unfolds for readers the message of God's saving righteousness in Romans. We find here a work that is theologically rich, exegetically faithful, and pastorally applicable. Doriani's excellent exegesis is sprinkled with stories that powerfully illustrate the truths presented. The world and the church desperately need to hear afresh the gospel of God in Jesus Christ, and Doriani presents it beautifully in all its richness and power."--Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Dan Doriani's Romans blends exegetical insight, theological soundness, pastoral passion, and homiletical vividness. Doriani shows us how Paul's magisterial epistle of the gospel of God's grace addresses issues raised by biblical scholars (the New Perspective) and practical challenges confronting all Christians (the connection between our once-for-all justification and the lifelong progress of our sanctification). Preachers, theological students, and other thoughtful believers who long to live in the joy and power of their union with Christ will profoundly benefit from this commentary."--Dennis E. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Practical Theology, Westminster Seminary California
"In light of the magnificent presentation of the gospel of God in Paul's letter to the Romans, it is a daunting yet desirable task to preach from it and even to diligently study it. But perhaps even more daunting is to write a commentary to assist others in their preaching, teaching, and studying of this exquisite exposition of the gospel of God, which we are eager and unashamed to proclaim. By God's grace and in his providence, Dan Doriani has wonderfully provided such a commentary that is accessible and faithful to the content of this epistle. Enjoy the use of it and proclaim the message in it."--Harry L. Reeder III, Senior Pastor, Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Birmingham
"Once again, Dan Doriani has provided the church with a commentary that is rich, accessible, and immensely helpful--this time on the glorious book of Romans! Because Doriani is a scholar, this commentary is full of deep theological insights gleaned from the original language and historical context. And because he is also a gifted preacher, it is packed with real-life applications and illustrations that help show how we are to faithfully respond to the text. Throughout, Doriani lifts our eyes to see the glory of our saving, redeeming, wise, and good God on every page of Romans. Whether you are preparing to preach, teach, or simply study Romans on your own, this is the resource for you."--Courtney Doctor, Coordinator of Women's Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition; author, From Garden to Glory, Steadfast, and In View of God's Mercies
"This reading of Romans is fresh in outlook, wise in counsel, and rich in illustration. It interacts with the best commentators but also draws widely from history (secular and church), biography (such as Augustine and John Wesley), movies, books (both best-selling and obscure), and the author's extensive life experience. Doriani's exposition channels Paul's own zeal for God's righteousness and the gospel's potency. Among numerous recent Romans commentaries, this one stands out for its combining of scholarly rigor with pastoral experience and personal warmth."--Robert W. Yarbrough, Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary
"What a wonderful commentary. Many want to preach Romans; in fact, it may be the most important book in the entire Bible. Yet it is also hard to preach so that the sermon doesn't sound like a theological lecture but rather touches the lives of the listeners. This commentary can help greatly. It is full of exegetical insights, homiletical examples, and other helps. This is a preacher's commentary."--Paul Kooistra, retired President, Covenant Seminary, Mission to the World, Erskine College and Seminary
"Who better to write a commentary on Romans than a New Testament scholar, seminary professor, and senior pastor whose heart has been 'strangely warmed' by the gospel of sovereign grace? That is Dan Doriani."--George Robertson, Senior Pastor, Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis
