About the Book

We live in a society obsessed with monsters You dont believe me Think of all the television shows and movies in the past two years or so which have featured vampires, werewolves, and assorted creatures of the night Im betting you can come up with at least twenty titles We like being scared We like screaming in the middle of a crowded movie theatre and then awkwardly pretending it was someone else We like that pulse pounding feeling evoked by Silent Hill and The Evil Dead because we can go home safe in the belief that it wasnt real Monsters are real, and human beings can be the scariest of them all Its an unfortunate fact that real life is sometimes even more twisted than the worst horror writer can imagine Nowhere is this seen more than when discussing serial killers Most people can understand, if not condone, a crime of passion And who doesnt comprehend how strong the desire for vengeance can be But what of those who kill, time and time again, for reasons that the common man, or woman, could not hope to understand Before going any further, it is necessary to understand how a serial killer gets that designation and for this we must turn to the good old Federal Bureau of Investigations FBI Those familiar with the Criminal Minds series will already know that the FBI has spent a great deal of time and resources in tracking, capturing, and ultimately understanding serial killers According to them, a serial killer can be classified as such if he used loosely since there are female serial killers: Has killed a minimum of three or four individuals, Has what is termed a cooling off period between kills, Generally kills for reasons other than profit, Typically chooses strangers as victims, although they may have some symbolic value, such as bearing similar features to the real but somehow unattainable target, Exhibits a sadistic need to overpowerdominate victims, often by means of torture These points help to distinguish a serial killer from spree killers or even mass murderers, since these two groups tend to lack a cooling off period However, some experts have suggested the inclusion of a hybrid spreeserial killer category This is because some serial killers have experienced prolonged periods of sequential murder without the expected rest in between

About the Author :
Damien Rollins grew up like any other kid who had a love for sports and an absolute lack of co-ordination. He remembers taking a baseball to the face when he was nine, and nearly passing out from the resulting nosebleed. That was to remain a constant in his life. Twenty years later, a newly married Damien decided to give up the bustle of city life for a future in the countryside. His dexterity had increased a little and he became an avid outdoorsman, spending his spare time fishing in the nearby lake or exploring bike trails. He might have gotten over his clumsiness, but his distaste for blood continued. His wife is fond of relating a rather embarrassing tale of finding Damien passed out on the kitchen floor. Panic-stricken, she had placed a frantic call to the paramedics, only to later find out that the cause of his collapse was a nicked finger. Damien continues to deny this to anyone who will listen. So how to explain his special interest in Serial Killer cases? To be honest, it came about by accident. Damien was doing some research on violence against women as a favor for a friend. Having three sisters himself, he was appalled by what he came acrossb&but never so much so as when he stumbled across pictures of Serial Killer victims. After much upchucking, Damien returned to read the details of the cases and became fascinated. What could compel one human being to exhibit such savagery against another? It was a question that haunted him and he eventually began looking into Serial Killers. By his own admission, his research sometimes gives him b a bear of a headacheb, and his wife has invested in her own computer after being traumatized by some of the sites heb s visited. Given her Stephen King fetish, Damien firmly believes this was just an excuse. Why take up such a macabre hobby? Heb d like to have kids one day and says that his research might help him be better able to spot suspicious characters around them. Heb s even considering taking up some Psychology courses in order to better understand why bad people do what they do. In the meantime, heb s decided to share some of what heb s learnt about Serial Killers, with his own brand of twisted humor thrown in for good measure. He has the full support of his wife and his dog, Bud.
