About the Book

Growth is contagious and anyone in a company can make simple choices that will accelerate growth in any business. Mastering the powers of clarity, energy, and impact can propel any organization to new heights. If you want to initiate a culture of contagious growth in your company, read this book. Conventional wisdom has long defined "Chiefs" as rulers of people--those at the top of the organizational chart who hold the most power. We've always viewed Chiefs as "special," selectively chosen to lead others. The perception in business and society is that only those at the top have the power to be Chief. Conventional wisdom got it wrong. And that needs to change. Now. The newly released Second Edition of Be Chief: It's a Choice, Not a Title obliterates the idea that only Chiefs with titles hold real power, a notion that's been holding us back from achieving our true potential. It's time to realize our true power. Be Chief shows us how. Be Chief isn't just for managers and executives--it's for anyone in any organization. Author Rick Miller has transformed organizations from startups to multinationals--helping frontline workers, managers, and executives at all levels achieve personal and professional growth and establish meaningful connections between what they do and who they are. The ability to tap the collective power of Chiefs at all levels holds the key to sustainable growth that today's companies demand and so many of us crave. According to survey after survey, a lack of engagement has enveloped today's workplace--at least seven in 10 workers are not giving 100% on the job. You may be one of them. It's time for a new way to think about where power comes from, and to consider new tools to help leaders build organizations full of empowered Chiefs. Be Chief delivers the tips, tools, and case studies to do just that. Be Chief reveals the choices essential to achieving individual and organizational transformation and growth.

About the Author :
Rick Miller is an unconventional turnaround specialist, a servant leader, and a go-to Chief. He is also an experienced and trusted confidant, an author, a sought-after speaker, and an expert at driving sustainable growth. For over 30 years, Rick served as a successful business executive in roles including President and/or CEO in a Fortune10, a Fortune 30, a startup, and a non-profit. In each case, he was recruited from the outside to turn around poor performance in difficult times. Rick Miller is a Chief not because of his many high-ranking titles, but because of his ability to bring out the best in others-and in himself-using the choices he developed in his Power Compass, a road-tested sustainable growth model he created over the course of his successful career, and which he shares in this book and continues to use with his clients. Rick has been in demand for the past ten years as a confidential adviser to many of today's most senior executives, and is extensively connected within the global business and leadership communities. Rick continues to serve senior executives by offering broad business experience in six specific areas: customers, competitors, costs, capital, communities, and culture. Rick helps senior leaders ask the right questions. Rick has earned a BA from Bentley University and a MBA from Columbia University.

Review :
By redefining what it means to be a Chief, Rick Miller explains what it takes to truly be successful at work―and in life. Rick makes 'power' a good word again, and teaches us how to have and use it to bring out the best in ourselves and in others. -- Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of QUIET: The Power of Introverts in A World That Can't Stop Talking This book reminds us that wherever you sit, it's possible to stand up and lead. -- Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals, Give and Take, and Option B I love Rick Miller's new book, Be Chief. Being Chief is what I would call an inside-out process. It's an inner feeling of power--but it's not about control. It's about being confident in your own strengths and in the ability to engage and thrive in your environment. It's attainable whether or not you are in charge--and it's transferable to everyone around you. With personal revelations, case studies, and an easy writing style, Rick shows readers how to Be Chief right where they are in any organization. -- Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The New One Minute Manager(R) and Servant Leadership in Action An easy to follow guide that can help leaders at any level unlock the potential in their teams. -- Tony Hsieh, CEO of ZAPPOS.com Inc., and New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness For the new manager or the veteran leader, Rick provides thoughtful insights and true stories about rebooting your approach to the challenge right in front of you. -- Gail McGovern, President and CEO, American Red Cross As women, we have traditionally been more likely to help others succeed to be Chief rather than focus on ourselves. This special book offers valuable examples of women who do both! BE CHIEF offers a simple and compelling roadmap of options for each of us to unlock our potential while being our authentic selves. -- Betsy Myers, former Director of the White House Office for Women's Outreach, author of Take The Lead Universal truths combined with practical tips and advice based on first-hand experience over decades of driving successful turnarounds. Read this book! -- Jack Canfield, co-creator, Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Series and The Success Principles, How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be The leadership values and skills of a chief need not be confined to the C-suite. Rick Miller's outstanding new book, BE CHIEF, is a guide to ways in which you can bring your leadership skills up to the highest level, and inspire those around you to do the same. Don't wait for someone to hand you the title, be Chief now! -- Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of Drive and To Sell Is Human A must-read for anyone looking for an impactful briefing on a lifetime of leadership lessons. -- Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers50 #5 world thought leader in leadership More than a business book, BE CHIEF is a valuable reference and resource guide that you will find yourself turning to time and again. -- Jim McCann, Founder and CEO of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM Not since Peter Drucker declared that our most important managerial assignment is the management-of-self do we have a volume that gives us a roadmap to elevate the positive power of anyone's sheer presence. Being Chief is a choice ―and it pervades everything a leader does from living your values to creating workplaces of "viral engagement." This is a great teaching tool. -- David L. Cooperrider, Director, Fowler Center for Business and co-Creator of Appreciative Inquiry, Weatherhead School, Case Western Reserve University
