About the Book

Over the past decade, synthesis of nano materials has been extensively studied not only due to their captivating properties and theoretical studies but also for their potential in a broad range of applications. Most of the nanotechnology products are manufactured from atoms, however, interestingly; the properties of those products depend on how those atoms are arranged. With the help of nanotechnology one can congregate the elementary building blocks of nature in a way that may be completely unnatural or synthesizing something closer to the existing structures. The strategies engaged in fabricating the nano materials can be grouped into two categories: "top-down" and "bottom-up". This volume explores a range of methods adopted for the synthesis of different nano materials, various factors affecting the stability, methods to improve its synthesis characterization and applications. The volume beings with nano composite particle synthesis with enhanced chemical and physical properties, one step sol-gel synthesis of porous inorganic glasses, novel methods for protein nano particles synthesis in organic solvents, nano fluids synthesis with enhanced the rmophysical properties for thermal engineering applications, synthesis and fictionalization of single and multi walled carbon nano tubes for application in biomedical field, synthesis of metal nano particles with enhanced catalytic activity capable of reducing the polluting gases exhausted from automobiles. This volume also discusses preparation of mesoporous ceramic thin films and nano porous iron anodic films, fabrications of gold nano wires and nano tubes, liquid phase synthesis of bimetallic nano particles, porphyrinoids organic nano particles; aromatic polyamide particle and nano filler synthesis. With the need of assessing the risk posed by nanotechnology, it is essential to characterize the nano materials being synthesized. A range of methods employed for characterization, such as X-Ray diffraction, Scanning and transmission electron microscope, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV-spectrophotometer, Raman and energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy and Positron annihilation spectroscopy are explained in this volume. The sole purpose of this volume is to be the reference guide for the fundamentals, practical and theoretical knowledge of synthesis, characterization and application of various nano materials for inter disciplinary under-graduates, graduates, engineers and researchers and scientists.

About the Author :
Dr. Naveen Kumar Navani, received his Masters degree (1993) in Animal Biotechnology from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in India. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Protein Engineering from Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, India. He served as a scientist in DNA Fingerpriting unit of an institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in India. He then pursued his post-doctoral research with Professor Yingfu Li at McMaster University, Canada from 2003-2007, in the field of nucleic acid engineering and Nano Biotechnology. In 2007, he joined Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Roorkee, India where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology. He is actively associated with Centre for Nanotechnology of IIT also. His work has been published in reputed journals like Chembiochem, NucleicAcid Research, Current Opinion in Chemical Biology and Methods in Molecular Biology. He has also written book chapters on development of Aptamer based biosensors for detection of pathogens, proteins and small molecules. His current research interests include biosensor development using chemical biology and nanobiotechnology; especially developing antibacterial packaging for extending shelf life of perishable products, developing whole cell and nanosensors for pathogen detection and removal of toxins, xenobiotics and bacteria using nanotechnology. His research is funded by Department of Biotechnology; Government of India, Indian Council of Agricultural Research through National Agricultural Innovation Project, State Biotechnology Board and Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt of India. Dr. Shishir Sinha is working as Associate Professor in Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India. Doctorate from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, Dr. Sinha is having more than thirteen years of teaching and research experience. His area of expertise is polymer surface modification. He has published more than 90 papers in international, national journals and conferences. He has handled several research projects and guided various M.Tech and Ph.D.students in the area of chemical engineering. Dr. Sinha has published two books in the area of Polymers.
