Review :
Australian quilter Doughty, coauthor of the quilting classic Material Obsession, returns with a deeper investigation of her distinct scrappy style, this time with a focus on mixing English paper piecing and hand and machine appliqué with traditional patchwork. Doughty is best known for combining traditional elements with contemporary fabric settings, and this book brings a fresh point of view to fans, rings, Dresden plates, and log cabin blocks. The projects are divided into four sections: "Go Slowly!" focuses on English paper piecing; "Wedge Work" applies wedge rulers in both familiar and unexpected ways; "At the Machine" highlights machine appliqué and quilt-as-you-go techniques; and "Mixing Textures" considers wool and wool felt used in appliqué. Each project includes an overview of Doughty's process for fabric selection--a plus for quilters who are curious about the factors that go into making that decision, or for quilters who have difficulty making the right selection--and the cutting and sewing instructions are easy to follow. Photography buffs will relish the gorgeous images of Doughty's finished quilts in rustic outdoor settings. VERDICT Experienced quilters curious about handwork and appliqué will delight in this collection as well as the glimpse into Doughty's design vision and execution.-- "Library Journal" Kathy needs almost no introduction. Her landmark shop (Material Obsession), which she initially owned together with Sarah Fielke, was at the forefront of introducing intense pattern and colour in quilt design. In this book you will be able to delve more into the thinking behind Kathy's creative ideas and her motivation. You will also be able to learn her own techniques and methods and replicate her patterns. The photography throughout showcases Australia at its natural best, providing a fitting backdrop to the powerful colours and shape of the quilts. There are 13 projects in all, which have been grouped according to style or method. For example, the 'Wedge Work' section features quilts made from various types of wedge shapes. This is the book to buy if you want to gain more confidence in working with colour and pattern.-- "Down Under Quilts" Take your quilt making in a new direction. Revitalize your style by breaking out of your comfort zone and developing your creative expression. There is a step-by-step guide to English paper piecing, wedge rulers and improvisational piecing. This book is a modern look at everything that makes a quilt tick - colour, style and design. It includes 13 designs plus Sew Studio. You'll find a background to each project, materials and a how-to put the quilt together and all the techniques explained. Templates are included. This vibrant book is filled with clear images of the designs, full of colour and interesting projects.-- "yarnsandfabrics.co.uk" Those who have been quilting for a long time have likely acquired a wide variety of skills, but may rarely be challenged to combine them in novel ways. For her fifth book, Doughty created adventurous and challenging projects that often incorporate both hand and machine techniques. Includes 13 new patterns, detailed instructions and color photographs demonstrating different techniques, and insights into how Doughty chooses fabric.-- "Quilters Newsletter"
