About the Book

This is the second edition of Electronic Applications of the Smith Chart, written by Phillip H. Smith, the originator of the Smith Chart. It covers the history, development and applications of the Smith Chart. This classic reference book describes how the chart is used for designing lumped element and transmission line circuits. The text provides tutorial material on transmission line theory and behavior, circuit representation on the chart, matching networks, network transformations and broadband matching. This edition includes a new chapter with example designs and description of the winSMITH software accessory.

Table of Contents:
* Introduction * Chapter 1: Guided Wave Propagation * Chapter 2: Waveguide Electrical Parameters * Chapter 3: Smith Chart Construction * Chapter 4: Losses, and Voltage-Current Representations * Chapter 5: Waveguide Phase Representations * Chapter 6: Equivalent Circuit Representations of Impedance and Admitance * Chapter 7: Expanded Smith Chart * Chapter 8: Waveguide Transmission Coefficient tau * Chapter 9: Waveguide Impedance and Admittance Matching * Chapter 10: Network Impedance Transformations * Chapter 11: Measurements of Standing Waves * Chapter 12: Negative Smith Chart * Chapter 13: Special Uses of Smith Charts * Chapter 14: Smith Chart Instruments * Chapter 15: Examples Using winSMITH * Appendix A: Transmission Line Formulas * Appendix B: Coordinate Transformation

About the Author :
Phillip H. Smith, 1905-1987. Phillip Smith earned his BSEE degree at Tufts College, majoring in electrical communications. He worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1928 to 1970. He is the creator of the Smith Chart for use in solving transmission line problems and this was put into use at the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory and other sites. He holds 20 U.S. patents in the microwave filed, including the basic patent on the transmission line matching stub the Cloverleaf Antenna, and the optimum power ratio coaxial transmission line. Mr. Smith also worked with the Signal Corps laboratories on radar. Later, he worked on early microwave radar antenna developments for submarine use under W.H. Doherty. Phil was active in the IRE and later the IEEE from 1947 onwards.
