About the Book

A guitarist, a philosopher, and a natural-born leader with a ponytail walk onto a football field. In the heart of a small mountain town where football reigns supreme and tradition casts long shadows, Ms. Chelsea Deal defies the norm. Amid the echoes of clashing helmets and the roar of a crowd, Chelsea, a former big-city lawyer now cast as the interim head coach for the undefeated Rabon Knights, becomes the unexpected mentor for two young players whose dreams echo her own. Palmer, a reclusive teenager brimming with untapped talent, and Ty, an old soul fighting the gravest of battles, join forces with Chelsea to overcome their differences and fight for a championship. As the season unfolds, so do the lives of these characters as each one strives to defeat personal challenges. Chelsea, with her keen instincts and generous spirit, seeks to rewrite the rules in a town slow to accept her. Palmer, elusive and insecure, navigates the pain of a dysfunctional family and the pull of interests beyond football. And Ty, the quarterback whose bright future is threatened by a deadly adversary, searches for strength in the power of unlikely friendships. From the smoky aroma of Southern barbecue to the indomitable spirit of a team that refuses to yield, The Playbook captures the essence of what it means to fight for every inch, every down, every dream. as a team. This story reminds us of the possibilities when we allow our instincts to take charge-when the game is no longer just a game, but a catalyst for life-altering experiences. Join us on the field and beyond, as Chelsea, Palmer, and Ty show us that sometimes, the most profound victories don't come with a score. Sometimes, when we break through our defenses, both literal and metaphorical, we find glory in unexpected places. And, sometimes, the games aren't just played, but felt, and the characters aren't just written, but lived.

"THE PLAYBOOK is a groundbreaking novel that challenges the norms of football and gender roles. Chelsea Deal defies expectations, bringing manicured hands and lipstick into a high school football scene traditionally dominated by males. Her drive and game skills are just the beginning; she leads her team with unique insights and determination, breaking the traditional playbook rules. Gary E. Parker's narrative brings Chelsea's perseverance to life, emphasizing the broader presence of women in sports. With a Christian foundation adding depth, The Playbook transcends sports, offering revelations about life, faith, and evolving goals. This novel is a game-changer, perfect for readers seeking an inspiring story of determination and faith in the world of sports." --MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW "THE PLAYBOOK by Parker is a heartwarming and inspirational tale set in a picturesque mountain town where football is more than just a game. This compelling narrative features well-developed characters, including Chelsea Deal, an inspiring interim head football coach, and Ty Rogers, a talented quarterback facing a dark disease. Parker's attention to detail brings high school football to life, allowing readers to feel as if they're on the field. The novel excels in portraying personal growth, the essence of teamwork, and the impact of mentorship. A thoughtful exploration of community and self-belief, akin to Friday Night Lights and Strong Like You." --EDITORS' PICK BY BOOKLIFE-PUBLISHERS WEEKLY "The Playbook is a heartwarming and inspiring tale that transcends the boundaries of sports, set in a small Georgia town where the most profound victories don't come with a score. Gary E. Parker, an accomplished author, weaves a compelling narrative around a female head football coach, a former lawyer who finds herself mentoring two young players, defying stereotypes and expectations. With early praise from notable figures such as Lori Locust, assistant defensive coach for the Tennessee Titans, this novel is a powerful exploration of mentorship, resilience, and breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated sport. Parker's unique cultural observations and captivating storytelling make The Playbook a must-read for both sports enthusiasts and fans of uplifting fiction." --INDEX-JOURNAL, GREENWOOD, SC'S TRUSTED SOURCE FOR LOCAL NEWS SINCE 1919 "The Playbook by Gary E. Parker is more than just a sports novel--it's a compelling tale of second chances, perseverance, and self-belief. When Chelsea, a former college football kicker and high-school coach, returns to the game as an assistant coach in the small town of Rabon, Georgia, she faces steep challenges. After an accident sidelines the head coach and the star quarterback, Chelsea steps up to lead the team toward the championships. But it's not just about football--Chelsea must mentor a troubled but talented athlete, navigate resistance from fellow coaches, and confront someone digging into her past. With themes of resilience, teamwork, and overcoming adversity, this story will resonate with both sports fans and those looking for an inspiring journey. Readers of all ages, even non-sports enthusiasts, will cheer for Chelsea and the likable cast of characters she brings to life." --BOOKLIST (A PUBLICATION OF THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION) "Gary E. Parker's The Playbook enthralls readers by capturing the triumphs and trials of leadership through the lens of high school football. This captivating sports novel follows Chelsea Deal, a former attorney stepping into uncharted territory as the interim coach of the Rabon Knights, an undefeated football team in a small southern town. Navigating a male-dominated field, Chelsea mentors two standout players: Palmer, a withdrawn talent on the verge of self-discovery, and Ty, a quarterback battling a life-altering illness. With richly drawn characters and a vividly depicted setting, Parker delivers a story where football transcends the field, shaping relationships and challenging norms. A compelling read for anyone who appreciates stories of mentorship and underdogs overcoming the odds." --THE FEATHER (A FRESNO CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PUBLICATION, FRESNO, CA)
