About the Book

Real-time systems are of importance to a large number of university laboratories and research institutes worldwide, and without the proper integration of real-time into distributed computing, institutions simply could not function. Achieving Real-Time in Distributed Computing: From Grids to Clouds offers over 400 accounts from a wide range of specific research efforts. Major focus is given to the need for methodologies, tools, and architectures for complex distributed systems that address the practical issues of performance guarantees, timed execution, real-time management of resources, synchronized communication under various load conditions, satisfaction of QoS constraints, and dealing with the trade-offs between these aspects.

About the Author :
Dimosthenis Kyriazis received the diploma from the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece in 2001, the MS degree in Techno-Economic Systems (MBA) co-organized by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept - NTUA, Economic Sciences Dept - National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Industrial Management Dept - University of Piraeus and his Ph.D. from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens in 2007. He is currently a Research Engineer in the Telecommunication Laboratory of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). Before joining the ICCS he worked in the private sector as Telecom Software Engineer. He has participated in numerous EU / National funded projects (such as IRMOS, NextGRID, Akogrimo, BEinGRID, HPC-Europa, GRIA, Memphis, CHALLENGERS, HellasGRID, etc) and currently serves as the Technical Coordinator of the IRMOS EU project. His research interests include Grid computing, scheduling, Quality of Service provision, and workflow management in heterogeneous systems and service oriented architectures. Theodora A. Varvarigou received her B. Tech degree from the National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece in 1988, MS degrees in Electrical Engineering (1989) and in Computer Science (1991) from Stanford University, Stanford, California in 1989, and her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1991. She worked at AT&T Bell Labs, Holmdel, New Jersey between 1991 and 1995. Between 1995 and 1997 she worked as an Assistant Professor at the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece. Since 1997, she was elected as an Assistant Professor, and since 2007, she is a Professor at the National Technical University of Athens, and Director of the Postgraduate Course “Engineering Economics Systems.” Prof. Varvarigou has great experience in the area of semantic Web technologies, scheduling over distributed platforms, embedded systems, and grid computing. In this area, she has published more than 170 papers in leading journals and conferences. She has participated and coordinated several EU funded projects such as IRMOS, SCOVIS, POLYMNIA, Akogrimo, NextGRID, BEinGRID, Memphis, MKBEEM, MARIDES, CHALLENGERS, FIDIS, and others. Kleopatra G. Konstanteli was born in Athens, Greece in 1981. She received her diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2004 from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). In 2007 she received a Master in Techno-economical Systems by the NTUA in cooperation with University of Athens and University of Piraeus. She is currently pursuing her doctoral-level research in computer science while at the same working as a research associate in the Telecommunications Laboratory of Electrical and Computer Engineering of NTUA and participating in EU funded projects. Her research interests are mainly focused in the field of distributed service-oriented computing.
