About the Book

Randi Jensen has brought us a fascinating and illustrative view of suicide from the inside. After 24 years struggling with her own suicidality she gives us an insightful explanation of how suicidal thought develops over time through endorphin-driven neural pathways. She does this in a way that compels us to turn each page to learn more, to experience more, to garner more hope and understanding. Moreover, Jensen gives the world a new way of helping individuals who battle with suicidality--a way that plucks suicide out of the stigma of emotional instability and places it rightfully in the realm of psychobiology. This book is written in a way that you feel you are sitting with her having a deep and heartfelt conversation.

About the Author :
Randi J. Jensen is currently Director of The Soldiers Project Northwest, a nonprofit organization providing free counseling for Afghanistan and Iraq veteran and armed service members and their families. With a specialty in treating suicidality, she is a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a private practice in Seattle, Washington. She is adjunct faculty at several universities and a popular speaker on various mental health subjects. Randi provides instruction in the formation of suicide prevention support groups based on a protocol she developed (Jensen Suicide Prevention Peer Protocol, JSP3(c)-www.jsp3.org). Randi is also a contributing author to the publication "War Trauma and its Wake" (Routledge, Sept. 2012).

Review :
"This is one of the most relevant books I have read about the topic. It touches on so many things that others have not before, certainly the neurobiology of suicide which is so important and can explain so much. It is obvious that what is known in the addictions field is a gift to so many other maladies--a great job bringing the knowledge and aspects of recovery into those who are suicidal. Most importantly, Randi lets others know they don't have to suicide, there is hope and a way out. It will be a wonderful piece for the suicidal person, the family and friends, and the professional." Claudia Black, PhD, author of Changing Course: Healing from Loss, Abandonment and Fear, Repeat After Me, It Will Never Happen To Me. "As a retired military member and educator, I know the critical nature of knowledge in combating suicidality. This book brings a personal narrative to the many challenges everyone faces at one time or another in their lives. The knowledge this book brings can save yourself or someone you love. Suicide has been on the rise across our society for many years, but the education this book brings could help change that. It dispels myths and helps us understand the personal, psychological, and biochemical challenges millions of Americans face in their daily lives." John H. Carver, MSgt, USAF (Ret) "With eloquence, compassion and a big dose of brain chemistry, Randi Jensen's book provides a rich tapestry of information and support for those struggling to understand suicide. This is possibly the most useful self-help book ever--where else can one learn how to stay alive and help someone else stay alive? A must read for clinicians, family and friends." Terry Courtney, MPH, L.Ac., former dean, School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, Bastyr University "Our Veterans and their families need to read this amazing book, filled with stories that will create a new understanding and way of being. - ask for help and problem solve which is exactly what works for our Veterans. She makes it clear, fun and establishes hope. The formula of the Jensen Suicide Prevention Peer Protocol(c) (JSP3(c)) will save the lives of our Veterans! Finally you will understand what is happening in your brain and will move forward on a plan that works." Rod Wittmier, founder--National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide "[The book] grabbed my attention from the very beginning. This book definitely touched my heart. Randi really paints a picture with words that bring this to life, not in a depressing manner, but in a way that inspires the reader. This book gives hope. Randi was able to turn this around. That means that others can save their own lives as well. How neural pathways are created with repetition - looking at suicide as a neurological issue vs. mental health is very helpful. The whole issue of am I crazy?, addresses that. You aren't crazy when there is science behind behavior. Randi is a survivor. It takes tremendous guts not just to survive, but to find ways to help others." Lisa Newburger, LICSW, founder of Discuss Directives, LLC "I have Randi to blame for not getting much sleep! I started reading this book and couldn't stop--a great read--flows naturally and easily. The JSP3 group support makes perfect sense. It offers people in need a great service." Suicidologist Rick Matteson, founder of Contextual-Conceptual Therapy, LLC
