About the Book

This volume is a compilation of papers that were presented at Symposium 4 of the XX International Conference of the Mexican Academy of Materials Science - MRS Mexico, organised in collaboration with the MRS, 'Advanced Structural Materials' which was held from August 14–19, 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. The symposium was devoted to fundamental and technological applications of structural materials and continued the tradition of providing a forum for scientists from various backgrounds with a common interest in the development and use of structural materials to come together and share their findings and expertise. Topics include innovative processing, phase transformations, mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, modelling and the relationship between processing, microstructure and mechanical behaviour. Additionally, papers on industrial application and metrology are included.

Table of Contents:
1. Structure of dislocations and mechanical properties of B2 alloys; 2. Exploring the synthesis parameters and spark plasma sintering of tantalum carbide powders prepared by solvothermal synthesis; 3. Thermal behavior of celsian ceramics synthesized from coal fly ash; 4. Surface study of vitreous carbon obtained from glassy carbon powder; 5. Development of silicon carbide substrates for aerospace applications; 6. Synthesis and characterization of glass and glass-ceramic materials of the system SiO2-Fe2O3-BaO-Al2O3; 7. Effect of milling time on the physical and mechanical properties of celsian-mullite composites synthesized from coal fly ash; 8. Physical, petrographic, and mineralogical properties of limestone rocks from the peninsula of Yucatán; 9.
