About the Book

The Sum and Substance of the Gospel introduces readers to the life and writings of one of the greatest preachers of the modern era, Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892). Nathan A. Finn and Aaron Lumpkin's introduction traces the life and ministry of this great London pastor, focusing on Spurgeon's commitment to the gospel and the Lord Jesus Christ. Then, in forty-nine selections from Spurgeon's sermons, writings, and correspondence, readers can see for themselves the way Spurgeon reveled in the glories of Jesus Christ, His saving work, and its effects upon the believer. Table of Contents: The Life and Piety of Charles Haddon Spurgeon The Power of the Gospel Chosen in Christ Christ in the Covenant Union with Christ Christ's Sheep Will Never Perish Christ Died for Our Sins No Atonement, No Gospel The Necessity of Atonement Substitution Atonement and Jubilee The Scapegoat Christ, Our Scapegoat Healed by His Stripes Forgiveness Crucified with Christ All Hail King Jesus The Lord's Supper as a Picture of Redemption A Full Christ Seeing the Cross My Sole Hope for Heaven The Comfort of Christ's Sacrifice Mourning and Resting in the Cross Christ, Our Life All but Christ Is Vanity The High Standing of Christ Communion with Christ Feasting on Christ by Faith Thirsting for Christ A Sacrifice of Thanksgiving The Glory of the Cross The Cross and the World Forgetting Christ Sensitivity to Sin Hypocrisy Hindering Revival Confession of Sin Deliverance to Captives Godly and Ungodly Anger Good Works You Shall Be My Witnesses Praying for Our Children Personal Evangelism A Christless Sermon Preaching for Conversion The Grace of Trouble Enduring Persecution Committing Ourselves to the Father The Dead Who Die in the Lord A Gospel Plea Series Description Seeking, then, both to honor the past and yet not idolize it, we are issuing these books in the series Profiles in Reformed Spirituality . The design is to introduce the spirituality and piety of the Reformed Profiles in Reformed Spirituality tradition by presenting descriptions of the lives of notable Christians with select passages from their works. This combination of biographical sketches and collected portions from primary sources gives a taste of the subjects' contributions to our spiritual heritage and some direction as to how the reader can find further edification through their works. It is the hope of the publishers that this series will provide riches for those areas where we are poor and light of day where we are stumbling in the deepening twilight.

Review :
"As we circle the massive mountain of Spurgeon's works (the largest body of works by a single author in the history of Christianity), it is easy to become overwhelmed and wonder, Where shall I begin the ascent? I heartily commend this marvelous little volume as a great starting place! The selections are outstanding, every one of them centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ. They are delightfully brief, wisely arranged, and each one radiates with the unique gift of Spurgeon to capture our sublime Savior and His great salvation in words that become living and active in our hearts." -- Andy Davis, senior pastor, First Baptist Church, Durham, North Carolina "Personal piety seems to be on the wane in twenty-first-century evangelicalism. Thus, I was delighted to see The Sum and Substance of the Gospel: The Christ-Centered Piety of Charles Haddon Spurgeon produced by Nathan A. Finn and Aaron Lumpkin. Finn and Lumpkin skillfully bring Spurgeon's life and ministry to bear, especially his sermons, on the Christian life and personal sanctification. Every reader will be challenged in his or her walk with Christ and will gain an even deeper appreciation for Charles Spurgeon." -- Jason K. Allen, president, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City
