About the Book

Named a Finalist for the 2014 Bull-Bransom Award for best children's book illustrations with a wildlife or nature focus. "Dave Derrick has created a fantastic picture book that is entertaining, informative, and laugh out loud funny. When you add in his expertly drawn gestural illustrations, you have, simply, perfection. I wish I had thought of this!"-Chris Van Dusen, illustrator of Kate DiCamillo's Mercy Watson book series In India the Bengal tiger is the king of the land. But the giant saltwater crocodile is the ruler of the water. What happens when the kids of these fearsome beasts meet? Let's get ready to rumble! These animals sing their own version of Anything You Can Scare, I Can Scare Better! The tiger cub and little croc joust in a witty war of words. In a playful game of one-upmanship, they top each other's boasts of who owns the most frightening canines, claws, and capabilities. Climbing trees and swimming circles around each other, they are truly well-matched adversaries. But will these terrible tykes discover someone even scarier than them? No elephant is waiting around to find out the answer! Enjoy an eye-opening adventure, illustrated by a veteran DreamWorks Animation artist. "In the style of an animated children's movie, this endearing book captures the voices of two young jungle tots in a power struggle... Sculptor and animator David Derrick imbues his characters with the spunky personality reminiscent of Simba and other classic movie friends, bringing them to life with colorful, cartoonish drawings and boastful dialogue. This tale of independence and humility will be adored by children ages three to seven." - ForeWord magazine

Review :
"There is no doubt that the mighty tiger and the great crocodile rule the wilds of India. But when the fuzzy tiger kitten and the baby crocodile have a showdown, the only thing that is ferocious is their posturing. The two babies romp about in the water and on land as they argue about who has the sharper claws and teeth, who is stealthier, and who is scarier. Both are all bravado until they look around and can't find their moms. Scared and lost, the two are giddy to be quickly found by their large and much more imposing mothers who, both little ones agree, are actually the scariest things in the jungle. The watercolor illustrations, warm jungle colors, and cartoon style contribute to the sweetness and safety of this fierce-off. An interesting field guide on the endpapers adds to the lovingly drawn animals and identifies some lesser-known animals such as the guar, bittern, sambar, and golden langur." "easily the family favorite... The font color is different for each animal so that your child can easily identify who is talking...It’s a wonderful device that works very well. You learn all kinds of things about the behavior and habitats of each animals... Eventually, the youngsters realize they have strayed too far into the jungle alone, and just who is the scariest thing in the jungle. I won’t spoil the ending for you. It’s too wonderful." - Geek Mom "This book is a lovely combination of descriptive text, cute characters, and information about the animals. I just love the rivalry between the tiger and the crocodile... it is humorous and oh so cute as a combination at the same time. I think that as a teacher I really appreciate the dialogue between the characters. I would use it as an example of how to mix in information into dialogue in addition to discussing how there is a fun whip-smart argument that occurs through the book. The illustrations additionally bring this book to life in a surprising way, with a combination of fierce creatures warning you to stay away but simultaneously the characters are quite cute." - Styling Librarian "I highly recommend I'm the Scariest Thing in the Jungle! for school, home, and library collections. The story is fun and engaging while sneaking in a bit of education about life in the jungles of India. The illustrations are cute and bold, perfectly matching the humor and adventure of the story." - Sharon the Librarian "Dave loves drawing, and he really loves to draw animals. This little story about a junior crocodile and tiger cub doing their best to out-boast each other is loaded with charm, done with gestural ink line and watercolor wash." - Blackwing Diaries "With wonderful and funny color illustrations this author/illustrator depicts the alligators and crocodiles, the two scariest creatures in the jungles of India. A young crocodile and young cub try to outdo each other to prove which is the scariest... The humorous illustrations grab the reader from the start, but information will be gained about the jungle animals as well including new ones mentioned such as sambar, gaur and chital.” - Puget Sound Council for Reviewing Children’s Literature/Media "The rivalry between the two jungle juniors is a perfect text for the varied watercolor spreads. Young readers will want to play-act this one out." - Deseret News "I'm the Scariest Thing in the Jungle is one of those books that you realize could easily become your child's most favorite stories of all time. The book that, when they grow up, they'll want to read to their own children." - Just a Little Creativity "The exuberant, colorful artwork only slightly anthropomorphizes the India jungle animals in this enjoyable storybook that's just plan fun to read aloud." - Midwest Book Review "Though we both enjoyed this story, what really won us over was the illustrations. They're fabulous, and are perfect for young children who enjoy looking through picture books. This book is the whole package- it's a great picture book, and fun story to read." - Mundie Kids
