About the Book

In Mountain. Memory. Marsh., Carol Parris Krauss embarks on a poetic journey of self-discovery, weaving together the landscapes of her life from the Appalachian foothills to the coastal marshlands. She explores the essence of identity, roots, and personal significance through vivid imagery and introspective verse.

Krauss's poetry traverses both geography and time, inviting readers to accompany her on expeditions from Charlottesville to Pawley's Island. Her verses span historical figures like George Pickett to intimate portraits of her ninety-six-year-old mother, creating a rich tapestry of personal and collective memory.

This collection is a profound exploration of love, loss, and the human experience. Krauss's vivid language and keen observations transform her quest into a universal journey, allowing readers to reflect on their connections to place, family, and self.

Review :

Carol Parris Krauss's Mountain. Memory. Marsh. lyrically explores the complexities of life and relationships. Woven throughout is evocative imagery of the Mid-Atlantic landscape, but this collection transcends location. Overarching themes of memory, loss, transience, and our inextricable connections to the natural world permeate the poems. In poem after poem, Krauss navigates the emotional terrain of the human experience with empathy, wisdom, and a painter's eye for details.

Richard Jordan, author of The Squannacook at Dawn

Each poem in this collection feels created by seven lucky cameras pointing everywhere interesting. Anybody who lives in the Mid-Atlantic knows it presents itself like the point nomads from south to north could no longer walk (besides the weather had cooled enough) or nomads from north to south could no longer walk (besides it had not snowed more than two hours). Either way, those travelers planning to keep going decided to rest here and live forever.

Jeffrey Hecker, author of Ark Aft

I was completely captivated from the start by Carol Parris Krauss's new collection Mountain. Memory. Marsh. which explores relationships with loved ones and memories but so much more. A reader will find this emotive collection both a story that had to be told and a call to pay keen attention to one's own.

Samantha Terrell, author of Dismantling Mountains
