About the Book

Traditional Concentration Meditation as Presented by the Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw Two experienced American meditators explain the stages and techniques of concentration meditation, as taught by the Buddhist master Pa Auk Sayadaw Practicing the Jhanas is a clear and in-depth presentation of the traditional Theravadin concentration meditation known as jhana practice. Drawing from the teachings of Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw, this book offers a comprehensive exploration of the jhanas, tracing their significance back to the Buddha's own journey toward enlightenment. Through personal experiences and detailed instructions, the authors bridge the gap between ancient teachings and modern meditation practices, emphasizing the transformative potential of jhana as a path to deeper concentration and insight. Readers will discover a meticulous approach to meditation, learning how to cultivate serenity and concentration through samatha, and progress through the material and immaterial jhanas. The book provides practical guidance on overcoming hindrances, mastering jhana factors, and exploring advanced practices such as the Four Elements Meditation. By engaging with these teachings, practitioners can purify their minds, gain insight into the nature of reality, and ultimately move toward liberation. This book invites readers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth, offering a rare opportunity to learn from esteemed meditation masters. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or new to the practice, Practicing the Jhanas is an invaluable resource that promises to enrich your understanding of meditation.

“A fascinating look at the inner experience of jhana meditation as taught by the Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw. Tina and Stephen are among a very few Western students of Sayadaw who can speak authoritatively about these profound levels of concentration. Their work is a most valuable addition to the contemporary literature of Theravadin Buddhism.”
