About the Book

Natalie Scott is widely recognized as a literary and cultural dynamo of the early 1900s. As a Red Cross nurse and translator, she was awarded the Croix de Guerre, France's highest medal for bravery, in World War I. She was also a celebrated writer and journalist in both Mexico and the United States. She founded several artistic and literary colonies, socialized with a group that included William Faulkner and Sherwood Anderson, and even created a peasant school and medical cooperative in impoverished Taxco, Mexico. This incredible account of her passions, causes, and adventures is one of a real New Orleans lady, a lady whose comfort in the role of Southern woman belied the adventurous and varied life she led.

About the Author :
John Wyeth Scott was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1976 to 1988. Aside from his political career, he teaches history classes and has been practicing law for more than thirty years. He has written several dissertations on the life of Natalie Scott, but this is the first book he has published on her. Natalie Scott is the aunt of John Scott, a fact that encouraged him to research further into his own family history and the history of Natalie's life. Scott is a self-proclaimed history buff, with a focus on Louisiana and New Orleans in particular. He has published several articles pertaining to southern history in The Journal of Mississippi History and The Journal of the Louisiana Historical Association. His dedication to the preservation of Louisiana history has earned him the Presidential Memorial Award from the Louisiana Historical Association. He has also served as president of the Rapides Arts and Humanities Council. Since 1998, he has been a lecturer at Tulane University and an assistant professor at Louisiana State University of Alexandria. His main interest, however, lies in Natalie Scott and the legacy she left around the world. Scott's main focus in Natalie Scott is Natalie's life pertaining to the early nineteenth century and the era spanning both world wars. Her actions inspired him to write about who Natalie Scott was and what she represents to him-as a family member-and to those she affected. John Scott has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane and a master's degree and a doctorate in history from LSU. A member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, he opened his own practice in 1972. Scott lives with his wife, Cynthia, and is a lifelong resident of Alexandria, Louisiana. He has three children and two grandchildren.
