About the Book

This step-by-step technique reference introduces and thoroughly explores several styles of knitting that involve color/yarn changes to create intricate patterns and designs. With Colorwork for Adventurous Knitters, you'll delve into exciting methods including striping, slipstitch, mosaic, stranded, and intarsia knitting and duplicate stitch and embroidery embellishment. While colorwork is commonly found in knitting projects, each colorwork knitting method requires skills that are difficult for someone to simply grasp on their own without careful guidance, which is just what this volume provides. Each section includes easy-to-follow, illustrated instructions, teaching all that is necessary to master the required knitting skills. Charts, diagrams, and graphs are also provided, and swatch exercises in each section give the reader a chance to try the skills. Sections end with three to five small projects. This volume is an inspiring addition to any knitters library.

About the Author :
Lori Ihnen is a professional fashion designer of both hand-knit and sewn clothes, with a degree in clothing design from the University of Minnesota. She specializes in designing intricate stranded designs, often inspired by nature, and her hand-work is so intricate and precise that it is often mistaken for machine-produced knitting. Her designs have also been published in other books, including Top Notch Knits and Bags, a Knitters Dozen, A Garden Stroll: Knits Inspired by Nature, and the video Fair Isle without Fear. She also designs for magazines, including Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knits, and Knitters Magazine. She was commissioned by the Minnesota Historical Society Museum to design a cardigan sweater for their permanent collection, Minnesota Female Fiber Artist. She lives in Mounds View, Minnesota.

Review :
"Changing colors is one of the foundation techniques of knitting. Ihnen revisits that technique, introducing tips that make the process of striping easier for both flat knitting and knitting in the round. Successive chapters introduce other, more difficult types of pattern knitting: stranding, slipstitch, mosaic, and intarsia. Each colorfully illustrated chapter includes technical information about the technique, pictures of various patterns that might serve as practice models, and three or four step-by-step projects to put new skills to the test. Charts (with tips on how to read them) appear in color, and required materials are located in boxes heading each project. Experienced knitters of a variety of ages will be attracted to these projects: a flap purse, a cap decorated with an owl design, wristlets, and a colorful child's cardigan. The final chapter considers ways to further embellish a project by using embroidery stitches, ribbon, cording, and other special knitting techniques. Like Burger's book Crochet 101, below, this has a covered spiral binding that will need to be reinforced, but the extra effort will be worth it where knitting books are especially popular." — Booklist, December 15, 2012
