About the Book

Introduced in 1995, this text seeks to offer a balanced, clear perspective on a delicate issue. The authors examine boundaries and boundary violations in psychoanalysis, and equip readers with strategies for recognizing and dealing with boundary problems on the part of clinicians and patients. Using history, theory, case examples and practical approaches, Dr Gabbard and Dr Lester help clinicians develop a comprehensive understanding of ethical boundaries - and apply that understanding in practice by examining boundary transgressions. Topics include the history of boundary violations in psychoanalysis and the experiences of figures such as Freud and Jung; posttermination boundaries; the role of boundaries in psychoanalytic supervision; and practical institutional responses to serious violations, including preventive techniques, assessment and rehabilitation approaches, and transference/countertransference management approaches.

Table of Contents:
