About the Book

A team of 51 experts has created a reference that reflects a biopsychosocial approach to patient treatment that is accessible. The contributors have distilled the essence of their work into 20 crafted chapters - including three new chapters on the clinical treatment of children and adolescents - updating key clinical information related to a variety of settings, such as inpatient, partial hospitalization and outpatient. The chapters are organized around three broad areas, from normal development and assessment methods to diagnostic information and finally to treatment, these authors update and summarize: normal child and adolescent development, the psychiatric interview, psychiatric history and mental status examination; a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders that affect infants, children, adolescents, adults and seniors; the latest treatments, including psychopharmacology and electroconvulsive therapy; psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and supportive psychotherapy; and treatment of children and adolescents.

Review :
"It represents a monumental and successful effort to present the essential knowledge base of the field."- "The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease," "August 2004" "It represents a monumental and successful effort to present the essential knowledge base of the field."-- "The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease", "August 2004" "The editors have succeeded in condensing the foremost textbook of psychiatry to make it more manageable for students and practitioners. The result is itself a major text--twenty chapters, fifty authors, almost a thousand pages--and truly the essentials of modern psychiatry. Each of the major disorders is discussed. There is special attention to clinical and adolescent psychiatry; biologic and psychological treatments are reviewed; and the fundamentals of child development and the basic tools of the psychiatric evaluation are considered. There is no single book that is sufficient to make a psychiatrist, but this one comes close. The medical student or resident who has it at hand will have access to the most important issues and the leading experts in contemporary psychiatry."-- "Robert Michels, M.D., Walsh McDermott University Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, Cornell University" "This is a must for every resident or practitioner who wants an easy to read synopsis. I strongly recommend that every resident start reading this book from the beginning of their training. I know of no other synopsis that is authored by so many experts. Though it is called a synopsis, it is comprehensive enough to meet the expectations of the readers."-- "Raj Tummala, M.D., Doody's Book Reviews", "June 2004" "When this 1,000-plus-page book arrived, I expected to sample it here and there to review it. I found myself reading virtually the entire book, which tells you how helpful and readable I found it. It has an unusual degree of coherence and consistency and a tolerable degree of repetitiousness, especially for a multiauthored book."-- "Richard M. Waugman, M.D., American Journal of Psychiatry", "November 2004"
